nissan patrol or mitsubishi pajero?

Hi all im looking at a new towcar for a wyoming van and the two i have in mind are the nissan patrol 3.0l and the mitsubishi pajero 3.2 l both long wheel base im leaning toward the patrol as ive had an austrailian 4.2l one before and liked it a lot but the towmatch website leads me to believe that the pajero may be a stronger performer any of you guys got any suggestions about either pulling a similar sized t/a with a mtplm of 1678 kg

Luke, I have had a number of large towcars now, but I must say, the Patrol is a terrific vehicle, and I have no plans to change again. Absolutely indestructible and tows like a dream. The spec is very high also, but if you find one you like, just have a good look underneath for any sign of physical damage from any serious off roading which this car is more than capable of. It tows a Fleetwood Heritage with ease.

Nothing much to choose between them I would have thought so it really comes down to the best deal you can find.

I am a confirmed Pajero/Shogun fan and have towed with them for several years, including over two tonnes ocasionally but the Patrol has an excellent reputation as a tow tug and I wouldn't dis it. You don't seem to see many around though so getting a good one might need some patience

Hi Luke Sorry I can't comment on the Nissan never had one. However I currently tug with a 2.8TD LWB Pajero Exceed & am more than pleased with the performance. It tows like a dream & you never feel that there's any circumstance or conditions that it wouldnt cope with. The Pajero is a higher spec than the equivelant Shogun, it being what the motor trade call 'grey market' (i.e. a direct import from the East!) I,m sure whichever vehicle you choose you wont be dissapointed.

Luke,

Be careful if buying a pajero from a dealer you don't know, Jap imports are more likely to be clocked than Uk cars. I'm not saying ALL imports are clocked and there's LOADS of honest dealers out there.

but don't make the mistake i made with my Estima a few years ago. The dealer ended up in court , he'd Clocked it 100,000KMs!

Padjeros are good cars and tend to come fully loaded low milage & rust free!

Thanks everybody for the advice,sorry i took so long to reply but my laptop packed up on me on friday morning and im only just sorted again.I think im going after a patrol and im hoping that carl you might let me know was it a single or twin axle heritage your pulling and if you have any experience of towing over the alps into italy via switzerland or france and did you have any problems with overheating and pulling ability as i struggled over the gottard mont blanc and the frejus tunnel in the past 2 years with an oaklahoma and an indiana last year with an older 4.2 non intercooled which practically pulled its guts out trying to get the job done with the heater on full blast trying to keep the temperature down,mind you there were 4 large adults 130kgs approx each and a full compliament of equipment with us on both occasions.I was hoping to change to a 3.0l as its a more powerful and efficent engine ,but was wondering would the pajero be a smart option as its already over 300kg lighter to begin and with the extra weight of a new twin axle it might be a clever option. also in reply to gareth the imports over here in ireland tend to be predominently from the uk or up north.so ill just end up sourcing an irish patrol which are very rare oddly enough the dealer told me this morning that {only patrol owners own patrols} this seemed quite amusing to me at the time but i know what he meant anyway i wont have to worry too much about it being clocked. again thanks everybody for repling and hope to hear more of your experiences on this subject

Hi Luke,

David W again, I had the same experience as you going over the Central Massif (3k metres) last year in a Bighorn 3.0 TD. It just lost power and was very limp wristed.

I put this down to it being so low tech, modern diesels have more sophisticated electronics which can cope with higher altitude, basically by squirting in more fuel at higher boost.

I would try to get some actual owners experience before you commit as I think the Patrol 3 litre is not the most modern of lumps and it could prove quite slugish over the Alps. Likewise the Pajero 3.2 engine is quite ancient designwise and would probably struggle as well in those conditions.

I hate to say it as I am such a Mitsi fan but modern V6/8 engines from the likes of Ford, Volks, Peugot and Mercedes would make a better job of towing at altitude. Don't know about the Korean offerings but their engines are mostly cribbed from Mercedes and would probably lag behind in the tech stakes.

Hi David both the patrol and pajero have electronic fuel injection as far as i know, were my old patrol did not so my thoughts were to increase the BHP output further with one of those tunit engine chips.The tunit website states output increases on both of approx 30 bhp approx from about 160 to 190 bhp,so my thinking was that the extra power would be of benefit in the times where we were doing those alpine passes.I might also ask while im on the subject is it of more benifit to have a twin axle while coming down the other side as to give a more shared brakeforce distribution, i notice that a large single axles brakes get very hot on the descent and was thinking that it might be dissapated by the extra axle taking some of the load or should i stop every oppertunity to allow the brakes to cool down.Also what and where are the easiest paths through the alps with the least amount of unnecessary climbing i would quite happily go out of my way so as not to cause so much stress to the towcar. thanks luke

Hello Luke,

it is a 26' twin axle Heritage, with the added weight of aircon, twin mover etc, the Patrol is not the quickest vehicle up hill, but never struggles and certainly does not overheat,always gives the impression that it will keep going up any obstacle. Never towed over the Alps yet though.
