New to forum and would like advice please. I have a nissan almera tino dci2.2 (136ps). The kerb weight of the vehicle is 1450kg.

I understand the 85%rule would allow around 1232kg.

Nissan recommends that the vehicle tow max 1250kg.

I have been looking at a Sterling europa elite 500l. Miro 1175kg with pay load of 225kg. (I would think that 225kg would be far more that 3 of us would need!!)

Would it be a.safe b.legal c.comfortable to tow this van with my current vehicle. (would my insurance be valid if i went above nissans 1250kg recomendation!!)

I have limited towing experience but a little old to be a boy racer!!!

Thanks

Paul....

Hi Paul,

Would your insurance be invalid if you went above the Nissan tow limit of 1250 kg - you bet your a@@ it would be invalidated - and the car warranty - and it's also illegal and there is the possibility of points and a fine if you were road-side checked or involved in an accident

The 85% guideline is applied against the caravan MTPLM (maximum weight) and not the MiRO

So I'd suggest looking at a caravan with a MTPLM under 1250 kg.

Hi Paul

Agree with Rob on this one, even if you don't intend loading much in the van you only have 75kg to play with until you exceed the tow limit on the Nissan. This 75kg will vitually all be used up with the battery, gas bottle and spare wheel.

The payload quoted is soon swallowed up by gas bottles, battery, water / waste containers and fluids for hot water and toilet before you start adding bedding, clothes, food and utensils, not to mention awning and furniture.

To get significantly below a UK manufacturers MTPLM you would have to tow virtually empty, ie ex-works.

Your proposed MTPLM of 1450kg means that you'd be towing at 100% and exceeding the car makers recommendation by 200kg. With your admitted "limited towing experience" this should be a "no,no".

Unless you change your car, stick with a caravan with MTPLM around 1232kg.
