I have a Fleetwood garland 4 birth. I have just tried getting the caravan ready for use after winder. I drained everything and winter proofed the van but I have connected the water pump to test the water and taps and there is no water coming through hot or cold it is a crystal mm system with a whale pressure switch which I have tried re pressurising the system the pump pipe has water in it and I can see the water filling up the filter which I haven't changed as yet and feel this could be The problem going to change it tomorrow. Could anyone think of anything that could be causing the problem. Many thanks in advance.

there are several things that could be wrong. it depends on how you wintered it.
did you remove the filter completely if not some water could have been left in it, it has been cold of late and may have frozen up blocking the inlet.
have you closed the drain tap? are the taps open when you try to pump it through [cold first with hot closed] when it runs through them close the cold and open the hot to bleed the system.
have you tried closing all the taps except the kitchen cold one then after starting the pump put a finger over the spout and seeing if there is any air pressure when you let go???
try all these first, but I rather suspect that somewhere in the system a little water has been left in and frozen up causing a plug of ice. its easy done as the drain tap is not always the lowest point in the system.

Hello Asbrad,

The filter could be the problem, but before you replace it, try the following first.:-

If the pump has any air trapped inside its impeller chamber it may not start to pump properly. So whenever you want to change the water barrel (say to fill it up), disconnect the pump from the caravan. Then drop the pump into the water then reconnect it to the caravan. This should eliminate any air traps. Now try the pump.

Now back to the filter.
You should not use a filter if its been in the caravan over winter. It may have started to go rather unpleasant. However you may not need to buy a replacement. Caravanners who use UK sites will be pretty certain the water available from the mains taps will be safe. It may smell or taste slightly different but it should be safe. Quite a number of caravanners will fill up a small container for drinks and cooking, rather than using the water from the caravans pipes. Other rely on bottled water.

So do you need a filter in the caravan if all its being used for is hot and cold water for washing? So assuming you have a crystal system Mk1 with a conical filter with a clear cap, then what some caravanners do is to unclip the filter cartridge from the clear cap and simply refit the clear cap, using a little vegetable /cooking oil to lubricate the o ring seal. Be careful not to over tighten the cap as this can split the crystals housing.

Hope this helps.

Not mentioned is and depending on model of Crystal filter housing, there is a non-return valve in the stem the internal pipework connects too. If then this is jammed closed it will prevent any water getting into the van.
