Noisy and flapping awning

Hi there, does anyone's awning roof flap and rattle, ours seems to be terrible for flapping on and off the roof bars, we have it all pegged down and use the clip on storm straps you can buy. However unlike a previous awning we have had,, you can not secure the roof bars to the awning using bits of tie strings it just sits along the awning bars. then when you get a little wind it seems to rise and fall just by a couple of inches, however enough to make a right noise.

Any comments appreciated.

Andrew.

Andrew...try a full storm strap across the awning.

A tip...to prevent the strap from flapping is make a few twists in the strap rather than lay it flat across the top of the awning.

Hi, thanks for that, I wondered about a full storm strap to go right over the top.

And Yes!! ..... it is a Dorema awning.

Is this a common fault?

As I said earlier just in a bit of a breeze you can here and see the awning roof rattling and the frame creaking.!!

Hi Andrew,

I was told by the caravan dealer (awning section) to make sure the bars are tensioned nice and tight to take up the slack to stop the flapping and obviously that the awning is pegged down properly. If you use a full storm strap over the top of the awning put a small sponge or similar were the strap goes over the awning and the roof bar to stop the strap chafing.

We no longer use an awning but when we did I bought some foam pipe laging from the local DIY and put it around the roof poles before putting the storm strap on. I found this quieted the awning as it was no longer hitting the metal poles and only cost a couple of pounds.

Andrew, sorry to be late replying, but I missed your post re Dorema. I don't know if it's a common problem, but I have heard more complaints of this nature about Dorema than any other make. The problem appears to be that there is too much material in the roof panels, so no matter how tight you tension the poles, you cannot take the slack out of the centre, as you can only tension the seams. With mine so tight that you play tunes on the edges, the middle of the roof still flaps by about a foot, up and down. What I need is an awning repairer who will come on site to see what I mean, then repair it for me. Dorema have tried shortening it, but to no avail.

Are these full or porch awnings, as I was considering a Dorema porch ( the biggest one,a something XL).

I need to know, as if it will stop the other half complaining about my snoring it may be worth a punt.

Anyone know if these things are any good?

ColinA, mine is the huge President Vario, a cracking design, but flawed by the roof.A club colleague also has a standard size Dorema which is OK. It appears to be mainly the President which suffers from this problem. Maybe it's because of the huge roof area, as the President is 3.5 metres wide.Sadly, after attempting a repair which failed, Dorema then dismissed me by saying I had bought the wrong size awning. However, the same size Isabella or Bradcot fits perfectly.
