Personally, if it is your first time abroad, if you have not already joined the Caravan Club I would join and chose a site in their "Travel Service in Europe" book which you will get on request. We have been travelling to France two or three times a year now for many years. Each time we get a quote from Alan Rogers, Caravan Club, Caravan & Campi9ng Club and the Caravan Club have always come back with the best price. We also find that the Caravan Club tend to concentrate on touring caravans whereas Alan Rogers etc cater for tents also. Once you are over there and at a comfortable site you can always investigate the others!

Andrew, when are you going? This is important in France, because if you're going in peak time (mid-July to mid-August) then sites can be a completely different kettle of fish to later in August (when almost all sites 'quiten down' considerably). You may also need to book - as popular sites can fill up quickly for this period.

How far do you want to travel - and which ferry port are you using? Are you looking for inland/beach/lake - and what facilities do you need on site? If you've had a look at Alan Rogers, which sites were you thinking of? It's easier to give recommendations once we know what sort of thing you've been looking at - and in what specific areas.

Andrew try Camping Du Letty - they have a web page in English. Excellent site right on the beach and approx. 10 minute coastal walk to Benodet. Benodet is approx. 80 miles from Roscoff. we sailed Plymoyh to Roscoff - 6 hour ferry crossing but can be taken as part of the holiday. Benodet is in southern Brittany and is a fabulous town with plenty for you and the children, although it is not a "kiss me quick" resort. Sitre is spotless and generally quiet and peaceful. We have been there twice and enjoyed the stay both times. Brittany is also spotless. Follow signs for Quimper and Benodet is not much further.

We went via Select Site of Abergavenny, again on the internet. They were extremely helpful - all we had to do wa arrange, health cover through Post Office, Passports and get Euros - they did the rest. No matter where you go have a great time.

Andrew - the reason we sailed from Plymouth was that we did most of the towing in this country and not so far to tow from Roscoff. We went via Quimper to Benodet - it is approx 90 miles in total. Excellent roads - no tolls - only down side was that there is only one petrol station between Roscoff and Quimper so make sure you have sufficient fuel. At the roundabout by the Champion supermarket go straight across - DO NOT TURN RIGHT - this takes you to the harbour and is a dead end and very tight to turn with a caravan on tow - I know because I did it. All roundabouts have direction arrows reminding you which way to turn - driving/towing in France is no problem - roads are better than this country.

We had medical insurance through Select Sites - at the Post Office we had to obtain the medical cards for possible treatment in France if needed - apparantly only available from PO.

If you phone Camping Du Letty (or e-mail them) ask if you can have a plot by the beach - we asked and we had one. On the Camping & Caravan forum there are photos of how close we were to the beach. Also very attractive places to visit - Quimper, Concarneau, etc. Don't go to Brest - very poor industrial town.
