After the non summer we have had, I would like to go somewhere where sunshine and warmth is more likely next year, either in late June or September. I was thinking Northern Spain within an hour or so of Santander, so that it is hop off the ferry and you are there.
First off, from your experience what is the weather generally like in Northern Spain in September or June? According to Google temperatures are in the low 20s which surprised me. If this is the case then we won’t bother.
Second, can anyone recommend a site in the area; would prefer FSP s if possible but not a deal breaker. A bar and restaurant nearby or on site would also be nice but don’t need a full entertainment programme. Have been searching on the internet but now getting bewildered so personal recommendations would be really helpful.
Third, if not northern Spain, then any suggestions
TIA

We have used the Tropicana in Alcossbre, but you need to stay over at Zaragoza on the way down. Another nice area is Roses as loads of campsites in that area. If you join ACSI you can save a small fortune on campsite fees.

Northern Spain has some beautiful coastal areas plus picturesque inland mountains. We toured from Santander to Santiago and really enjoyed it. We went in June and had reasonable weather but several very wet or overcast days. July and August are the dryer months. It’s not called Costa Verde for nothing 😂

.......if your priority is good weather in June or September, then I wouldn't use the expensive 24hr ferry to northern Spain.
I would take a shorter crossing to France and book a site in Charente-Maritime.
Lovely interesting area full of interest with warm climate in September.
I was there in September 2022 with temperatures of 30 degC!

Thank you. 30 deg. That sounds more like it! Can you ( or anyone else) recommend a site.

Here are three of many sites in the area.
Bear in mind that the French wind down their camping in September...many sites close so check they are open.
Camping Port Punay is very good...open to September 22nd.

We can second Port du Punay. Brilliant site. Swimming pool, restaurant and small shop. Close to the beach. Lidl and other supermarkets about 4 miles away. Cognac for brandy not too far away and a pleasant drive.

As a comparison we were just outside La Rochelle in mid September this year and the weather was totally rubbish, lots of rain (some of it very heavy) and around 16-17⁰

I have been to the same area, at the same time of year and it's been mid to high 20's

A couple of years ago in the Loire it was 34⁰ in September!

The worlds climate is certainly mixed up, I am in Weymouth on the south coast, it's currently 16.8⁰ at the moment (13:25) which isn't right for late October is it.

Port Punay is our favourite site!
But it's ESSENTIAL to book at any time of the year. Even in mid Sept they were turning people away, and thats normal for them.

Isn't Weymouth supposed to have the best weather in the UK?

I dont know, but it does have it very own micro climate as its totally surrounded by hills. Frost is a VERY rare experience here!

But we do have the second highest Band D council tax in the country, our 3 bed semi is £2560

We went to an amazing site in a place called Noja (pronounced no ha) which is 100m from the sea, with the backdrop of the hills and mountains behind you.

It's where a lot of the Spanish go on holiday to escape the very hot weather in southern/ central parts. It's also a stop off point for birds of prey in September (ish) time who are heading south to Africa for winter. We had 20+ eagles soaring above us on a regular basis.

Noja is approx on hour from Santander.
If you like the idea then I could look it up for you or look on Google maps satellite version and you'll see it - it's a biggish site and I think there's a smaller one , but it's easily visible on the map.

As a matter of interest, do you know if dogs are allowed on the beach? That was always our biggest issue when visiting Spain.

Hi. It's twelve years since we went so lots of things could have changed, but when we went there were no restrictions.
The site staff spoke excellent English, so a quick phone call when they open for the new season will get you an up to date answer 👍
