I'm a bit confused about nose weight. On my car the vertical load marked is 75 kg. Does that mean that 75kg is the maximum or does it have to be exactly 75 kg or what?

Thanks , Wes

Its a maximum not to be exceeded. As vans tow better with a bit of noseweight I would aim for 70-75 actual.

With all the cars i have owned with a 75kg nose weight limit, fitted with standard suspension, i have found the best balance at 60 to 65kg.

Above that the back end would drop too much, and the front end became too light.

You need to find the best compromise for your car.

seems strange that the front end should become too light when the noseweight is on the limit. That would mean that the front end would be as least as light when travelling solo but with the boot full.

The noseweight must not be an extra burden. If there noseweight acting on the towbar you must put correspondingly less in the boot. Otherwise you would exceed the GVW of the car which includes the noseweight and/or the maximum permitted rear axle load.

In practise, with a family, the boot will be full, only so much can go in the caravan.

If the car starts to sag at the rear then spring assisters are deployed.

I would have though that with a reasonably modern car if it sags at the back and the springs aren't broken then it's overloaded. You've got a max axle load for both the front and rear and a total GVW, if you shove 75-100kg onto the towball that's weight that you can't use as payload or even passengers, however many people you've got in the family. By its very position the tow ball will tend to lift the front and so will a great bootful of stuff because it's mainly all behind the axle.

I should have added that the last car i fitted with spring assisters was a primera in 1999.

Basically, you could fit the strongest and most powerfull spring assisters in the world, but if your weight is over the GVW of the car......your A.Driving dangerously and B.breaking the law.
