Not come across this before

Just got back from a weekend away near Oxford with 5 fellow caravaners, I was last to arrive and when I came to plug into the EHU there were no empty sockets so I went to reception and what had happened was a van on a non electric pitch had plugged in as he thought that having free EHU was not a problem.
On Saturday we all went out for the day, however I came back early and saw them quickly come and remove their mains cable and replug in one they had removed,we had been out for three hours.
They obviously do this on a regular basis but someones van was unplugged for three hours ,so their fridge would be off and if they had their dinner in a slow cooker for their return then they would have a suprise.
Has anyone else come across this I have not in 37 years of caravanning.

That's a very underhand thing for someone to do when they're on a non-electric pitch. As you say, the fridge of a caravanner, who has gone out for the day, could have their fridge off for hours. Never heard of this sort of thing happening before. Was it a CL or CS you were on?

Cant believe what I have just read plotter thats is dispiciable
Surely they should have been removed the first time!
And charged for the EHU, but to catch them a second time is beyond belief.
Hope you crept over and cut there plug off before you left

Hi everybody, never come across this before but it is a bit mean and a bit below the belt, l know that l cant always have ehu but l would not do what they have done, but just had to rely on battery power.

I've seen similar on a CS site where a couple in a motorhome tripped out their supply and rather than resetting it or admitting what they had done they proceeded to slyly remove my hookup and swap the cables over leaving mine with no power. Fortunately they did not realise I was just coming back from a walk and through a gap in the hedge I saw them making the change over. They even had the bl**dy audacity to deny it despite my cable now being plugged into a socket on the other site of the bollard. 'Kind' words were said and the trip reset after explaining that Alde heating on a 2kW setting, a hair drier, a domestic kettle were probably not a good bunch of appliances to use at the same time. Sometimes bad manners is just ignorance and sometimes it is bad manners and ignorance with a good helping of no respect for others.

I shall say which site it was because no way is the site at fault,It was Greenhills Leisure CP at Bletchingdon ( moderators feel free to remove site name) so not a 5 van site which I guess makes it easier to do this ' unobserved '
I couldnt believe that they having been discovered once they did it again, I wanted to go and report the second incident but was concerned about possible trouble whlst we were out.

The warden should have removed their whole EHU cable & offered it back to them on their departure

Nothing short of thieves.
I'd have terminated them.
Told them I had a short fuse and was well connected to the powers that be and that my friends were live wires not to be messed with.

That my friend is why they do it. If people do not have the courage to complain, how are the site owners going to do anything about it.

It seems to ba facet of modern life today that you must try to get away with as much as you can without paying for it. So what were these people relying on during the hours of darkness .. .a battery? . What these people often fail to remember is that nearly everyone has some way of recording underhand actions on their phone...it just needs as much stealth as these theives to 'get' them.

If you had seen them and their many visitors you too may have been reluctant to report them and then leave your van unattended.
That of course makes me the guilty party.!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you were not prepared to complain at the site, why complain on a forum, does it make you feel better?
Will it stop them from doing it to someone else?
No of course it won't. If people do not stick up for themselves, then things like this will just get worse until you won't dare leave your van at all.

I do not believe that I was complaining but merely drawing peoples attention to the incident,as already stated the people in question gave the impression that retribution for making a complaint was a very real possbility. So of course its easy to be brave at a distance.

If you are using Internet Explorer some versions are not compatible with the coding used on more recent websites Barry
I sent an explanatory email to you but if you missed it Click Here for instruction on how to set up IE or better still switch browsers to Firefox or Google Chrome for trouble free internet use.

What Ho Tone!!

Hope that you and yours are all ok and it's great that you've had chance to get away in your caravan for a few days.
I have to say that nothing surprises me nowadays and the cheeky buggers stealing electricity and possibly ruining someone elses food into the bargain is unusual but sadly shows that the recent boom in touring caravan ownership hasn't only attracted nice polite types but also 'Jeremy Kylers' as we call them.
Unless we were actually there nobody can really say what they would have done, I can see your point about possible damage being done if you'd have reported them and they found out that it was you and can understand that you wouldn't want any hassle on a rare and well earned break.

……the site should have measures in place to combat this if they are offering both ehu and non ehu pitches.

For example………….
  • Non ehu pitches well away from any ehu points
  • Warning signs saying you will be charged the daily rate for electricity for your entire stay if you are seen using electricity that has not been paid for at any time.

I have seen both these strategies used.

hi, unfortunatly Plotters experience is not as uncommon as it should be it has happend to us not once but twice both on a small commercial sites, first time was a couple of years ago when we had the m/home after arriving back at site after a day out noticed that the EHU bollard was full and it should not have been as the pitch numbers were clearly marked on it, I traced the wire from our EHU to a tent in the field at the back, I asked the guy why he had plugged into our EHU "its first come first served he said iv'e got it now so tough luck get over it" ok I said we will see and reported it to the owner, he came over immediatly unplugged their cable wound it up and went to the tent half hour later they were packing up and left, obviously ordered off site.
the last time was last year in cornwall we were watching a bit of TV after tea first day on site when everything went off ah the post has tripped I said but when I went out to look someone had removed the plug and inserted theirs again I went to remenstrate with them the guy however was all apologetic well he said I have paid for EHU but my cable wont reach the other bollard that one must be mine because it is the last one in the line for this side of the field so you must be in the wrong one, fair enough I said we will see what the owner says and I went to the office when he came out, and this is the funny part indeed I was in the wrong bollard socket because the one nearest to us was full? apparently the van 2 doors away should have left before tea but over stayed his time and kept the EHU plugged in so there wasn't a spare one when the new van arrived it was all sorted out very quickly but the point still remains some people are not shy at removing your plug if they want to use your EHU point.
you just have to stick up for youself mind you Plotter it does help if your a bit "chunky" if you know what I mean

There is a way around this problem and it is practiced on some continental sites we use. The boxes are locked and a member of staff opens it and effectivley locks your cable in. Its extra work for them and a pain for the rest of us when we decide to leave but it does stop this.

Saw a similar electricity theft on a continental site that only gave 4 Amps per hook up. A caravan had a EHU lead running to the bollard as normal and a second lead from the same bollard dissapearing into its awning.

Hey up Tony! What's this, another operation? You trying to reclaim all the NI payments you've made?
smiley-laughing.gif

Where've you been lad? Been very conspicuous by your absence of late.
Sadly we cannot make the PC rally, as once again we'll be somewhere in mid-Europe, but we'll raise a glass or two to the success of the event.
Remember the inventive minds on the Smokaloo project? Perhaps we can get them working on a locking system for EHU plugs! Hope all goes well with the op.

Thanks plot, something else to keep an eye out for when camping, in laws thought they had a fridge problem on there last outing, who knows might have been somebody using there electrical connection whilst they were out, at the time i would have thought the senario Plots mentioned highly unlikely but it just goes to show, maybe not as unlikely as at first thought..........
