Is it a gas smell, or something a bit different? If the latter it could be a new burner jet could be required and the fumes are venting inboard as fridges tend not to be very well sealed.

If this problem is only evident when the fridge is on gas then you need to have the fridge looked at by a qualified gas engineer. In the meantime ONlL use it on 230v and turn the gas supply to the fridge off at the multi-valve manifold.

Pop the fridge vent off on the side of the caravan and see if you can see anything burning or melting. There is a slim chance that a wire or similar has moved and is touching something hot, however as others have said, getting the fridge checked/serviced would be a wise precaution as the sort of smell you describe sounds like burning plastic of some sort.

The vents should have two sliding clips, look from below.
Should be metal cover on burner (bottom right?) which can be easily removed for cleaning. On mine it was undo a screw and slide to left. See Youtube videos on cleaning 3 way fridge burners.

If its an acrid smell could it be amonia? if it is that could mean the refrigeration circuit has been compromised. It may not be repairable, Get it checked out.

First question is…..is it a new van?
If it is then it could be the paint burning of the rear of the fridge.

If it’s an older fridge then it could be incomplete combustion, a smell a bit like a dirty diesel engine running, there could be signs of black by fridge vent, this would confirm this

Oh my goodness! Presumably when it caught fire you were already in bed, so terrific that nobody was hurt. (Photo from 1.42 am!) Then you were able to stop the spread and prevent further damage to your or adjacent vehicles! Best of luck getting things sorted!
