Number Plates

Hi

Just came back with my caravan from France. I have been stopped by French police as a number plate was cracked. I had to pay 80 EURO on the spot fine so want to give a friendly advice to make sure your plates are road worthy before travelling. I would recommend a web site www.englishnumberplates.com as I have just received my new plate, great service, excellent quality and fully road legal. Good Luck!

Hi Nat,

Do you mean your numberplate was broken, or that the protective perspex cover was cracked? Is the perspex cover a legal requirement in UK, and if cracked would it be an MOT fail?

I believe that in France, a plate must be rivetted to the car (ours are stuck on), I can't remember if they must be made of metal ????, and they must be MADE in France. The last of those probably applies in UK too, now.... but that might depend on the age of the car/plate.

The perspex cover is not a legal requirement anywhere.

In many countries number plates must be metal (like here in Germany, too).

German plates are generally neither screwed nor rivetted, but held in plastic frames that the dealers supply free of charge and into which one can just pocket the number plate without the need for any tools. This is because number plates are changed fairly often because cars get a new number with every move to another region.

You haven't said if it was the plate on the caravan or one on your car.

Sorry to be picky but I guess most people have the one on the van stuck on (like ours)

There's nothing wrong with sticking number plates to car or caravan, even if the French don't allow it, as any such requirement can only apply to French-registered vehicles.

For what it's worth, French number plates must be pop riveted on by the supplying dealer/shop & can be plastic or metal.

Trailer plates can be stuck on.
