Hello All,

We would really like to go and see the passion play, possibly in August or September and understand that there is a campsite in Oberammergau that offers site plus tickets - just wondering if anyone on this forum has done this?

Best wishes,

Jonah.

you will find lots of information re the play and area. If you click on the guestbook it takes you to a forum where people leave tips, impressions etc.

Hope this helps,

Hi Jonah

We applied for tickets last October to be told that there were none available unless a package including accoomodation was booked. We agreed to be placed on a waiting list.

Out of the blue we received a 'phone call in April saying that two tickets were available. We gratefully accepted; fortunately or unfortunately they were in the third row! I won't mention the price as the memory still hurts.

So we will be watching the play on 14th September on our way back from Venice. We've booked a campsite in Rottenbuch

(www.camping-rottenbuch.de)an ACSI about 25kms from Oberammergau.

Talking to someone who has just returned from seeing the play, they heard that thousands of tickets allocated to U.S. forces Gemany had been returned due to the current economic climate. If this is true you may be in luck, otherwise they may be difficult or very expensive to obtain.

Hope you get to see the play,

Roland.

We had a look at the prospects last year. The idea was to take the van for an extended break, spending time at Oberammergau for the passion play.

We could not find any way of getting tickets except as part of an accommodation package. This would mean that we would have to park the van on a site somewhere, and leave it while we went to the play.

The cost of the various packages was ridiculous. The higher the standard of hotel, the better the seats, but they could not say exactly where the seats would be, just the approximate area.

The impression we were left with was that the locals were cashing in on the 10 year event and were only interested in making as much as possible this year.

Hello to you all,

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

We have e-mailed a campsite that do a pitch and ticket deal, but as yet have had no reply from them. We will carry on looking into it, and see how we get on. Thanks again.

Best wishes,

Jonah.

Hello Jonah

As promised, reporting back following our trip to Oberammergau.

We had an excellent time - a truly memorable experience. The organisation for the event was superb - if you can get tickets, then go!

Some top tips! Take a cushion to sit on. The seats are not bad, but it's a long time to sit! Take a very small torch (pen type) to read the translation of the script. The second half of the play does not finish till 10.45pm. Take plenty of water or such like - on Friday it was very, very hot....

As for ticket availability, I am led to believe that there are tickets available and would suggest getting in touch with the official tourist info office in Oberammergau www.oberammergau.de or email oberammergau@der.de (this is the official german tourist site, so will probably be expensive)!

We met caravanners who had left their vans on the site at Rottenbuch - might be an idea to contact that site direct for more info - seemingly it was very nice. Terassencamping Rottenbuch - www.camping-rottenbuch.de or tel 0049 88671500 or fax 0049 88678300.

Any other queries, just ask!

Best wishes,

Jonathan (humberflyer)

Hi Jonathan

We have booked to go to the Passion Play in August with the Camping and Caravanning Club and staying at the site in Krun the other side of G-Partenkirchen, they are providing a bus to get us there and back.

Since the break inbetween is about 3 hours long would you have any suggestion where we should book for a relaxed meal.

Thanks

Stephen

Hi Stephen

We had no choice of restaurant, as it was booked with our ticket, and was right at the other end of town - which meant a bus each way. A bit of a pain as it ate into the three hours considerably.

There are loads of restaurants all around the theatre, but a lot get booked up with parties. Suggest you might contact the campsite where you are staying to see if they can arrange a table somewhere?

As you can appreciate, when the break happens, 4500 people are all looking to eat at the same time!!

We did notice several cafes with empty seats though as we went to the bus, so you could chance it.

The play is excellent - enjoy the experience. Anything else we can help with, just ask.

Jonathan

Thank you for the information. A very good suggestion to try the campsite, I'll do that.

We are very much looking forward to seeing the play, like you we have heard others enthusing about how enjoyable it was.

Thanks again

Stephen
