Not quite right, Steam engines don't produce much NOX
yes but never the less they do produce NOx thankfully they don't follow the pattern of the other so called low NOx producer. the petrol engine which by 50,000 miles and all things being equal produces as much as the diesel engine then goes on to produce more so. shame all testing seems to be based on new engines and not on lifetimes.....

John L it makes perfect sense to people who understand it.Please read my other posts.During the EU lab test all emission controls were active as they should be for the cars life.During real world driving they are said to be reverting to another map.In my opinon for reasons such as the quoted power output can not be sustained at euro 6 levels.

Humour?

;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Love the piccy Sir gab, I saw the VW badge on the front :)
Only this week I was on the Dartmouth to Kingswear ferry (work obviously) and we had to wait to disembark
For the Paignton to Kingswear Steam train, absolutely fantastic sight. And the smell was something to be hold. :)

get ready for news updates . our government has known since 2011 that diesels emissions were 4 times higher than manufacturers claimed, ,err that means all makes not just VW......and not just DIESELS ! Apparently air pollution hasn't really changed since 2006 although the defeat device wasn't given to VW by Bosch until 2007 although Bosch made it clear...actually don't know what Bosch made clear, after all wasn't it giving illegal software out!

Announced today 1.2 million diesels in the Uk are affected vw's, seats, skoda's and audi's!! Not too many then?
My son is now waiting to see what they are going to alter? Loads of things to think of, will they give a courtesy car and refund him his fuel to get to the dealership and of course the inconvenience!
What he is really worried about is a reduction in power?

Tell your son to wait a while and see how the "fix" progresses.I'm sure the motoring press will be keeping a close watch on power and mpg etc.
I'd like to know if realistically there will be a depreciation in used values.

Hes not too worried about depreciation as he plans to keep the car for at least another 2 years, that's an awful lot of cars to recall , looks like the dealers will be busy for a year or too?

I would think your son will have to prepare himself for a power reduction. What ive seen of vw tdi,s is they all make more than the claimed power anyway on a dyno.
My understanding is the fix will be quite easy-flash the corrupt data file off the EDC control unit, leaving the correct file in place.

That's what he is worried about? If the power is reduced he will be looking to return it?
Apparently used VW golf prices dropped 3% below the norm for September?

The drop in price is to be expected, word of mouth and what have you.The thing is they might get away with doing nothing. But then every car from a certain date, lets say the 1st of november must meet the legislation. If you read carefully into it,it also effects euro 5 cars too.

Looks like anyone who owns a diesel will be affected by the VW emissions cheating? Looking through the new GAP price book today all diesel cars have dropped 2.8% with VW another 0.2 %

hang on Seth it was under the correct file that they first spotted that the cars were pumping out 10 to 40 times more NOX . i thing they are going to need to do more than just get rid of the defeat part which after all only came into play when the car was being tested .on the road the car went back to its normal running file. that was the problem as it didn't meet emission standards...

Well yeah Jonny that is right.Which ever way you look at it one of the calibrations will most certainly get deleted.I think it would be lets say the road calibration as thats were the excess nox was found. That leaves the lab calibration were everything worked as should.I suppose that is the cheat file really. But it has been stated this calibration produces less power.Time will tell.

My son has found out his GTD isnt affected by the cheat software, half of him is pleased the other half was hoping for a few quid back!!!
Its only Euro 5 engines that have been affected not the Euro 6 ones

"A VW spokesman has previously declined to speculate on how much effect the 'defeat device' could have had on NEDC results. In 2009 Europe’s NOx regulations were not as strict as those imposed in the USA, when legal limits were set at 70 milligrams/km, a drop of 90% compared to the limits that had previously been in place. That has led to suggestions affected cars would not have needed to activate the cheat software during European testing because it would not have been required to pass the tests. In 2009 the EU5 emissions limit for NOx was 180mg/km"

If this statement is to be believed . It looks like VW maywell be looking at a way to get around any serious actions against them in the eurozone

Did anyone see the CEO of VW USA get a grilling from a senate committee yesterday? Was uncomfortable but compelling viewing. Some of the senators really did make it clear their intention to wipe the floor with VW.

i thought that was a matter for the US courts as to how they wipe the floor with VW. Although they do tend to treat us Europeans much more harshly than they treat their own. I believe GM were found responsible for the deaths of over a 100 people ! due to faulty parts ! it seems VW may be fined ten times what GM were! when the case does come up i will be interested to see how VW lawyers handle it ,if they have any gaul it could be a real eye opener for some.....

NEWS FLASH. Honda Mazda and Mercedes all have cars that emit NOX at 20 times the EU level. Fiat Renault Nissan Hyundai Citroen Volvo Jeep have cars that emit ten times the level...... i am not surprised for a start off the testing regulations are and always have been a farce .

As I understand it there is no problem with getting the cars to actually work to the same standard as before it simply needs a part that would cost more than the computer fix. Basically you change the computer setting and add the part and the car should perform just the same.
