Old chestnut probably

Sorry, this has probably been done to death, but I can't find the answer.

Can anyone confirm whether it's a legal requirement to insure your caravan whilst touring in France? Only our van is so old it doesn't normally warrant insuring!

Thanks

Iain

It must be insured against third party claims, but this will normally be covered by your car insurance.

ps: To my knowledge, third party coverage without separate insurance on the van only covers you while the caravan is hitched up to the car. As most countries (I don't know whether this includes France) require third party coverage even when the caravan is standing on its own on a public road, it would be safest not to unhitch as long as you are not on a campsite.
