I think if I remember the Papoose was bu7ilt5 by an american company called Bowlus Teller Trailers. They date back to the 1930s.
If its the ones I am thinking of they look a bit like the Airstream caravans, this was due to the fact that William Hawley Bowlus one of the founders of the company had a long career in aviation, building sailplanes and guliders.

Did it look anything like the one in the picture but without the paint job?

There was a Bowlus Teller model called the Papoose which pre-dated the more familiar Airstream and Airstream founder Wally Byam, a former Bowlus Teller salesman, continued with the same design when Bowlus Teller stopped making caravans but I don't think that the caravan in the picture was American made.
