Sir Roger
I have a Shurflo and as Chrisn says it will run on for a few seconds after taps are closed and the system re pressurises. Also every so often it will pulse as pressure is maintained.
I think you may have cracked it.

It shouldn't really need to pulse from time to time, unless there is a very small leak, perhaps a tap dripping, or a joint just starting to weep. Perhaps the only advantage of an audible pump is that it does give warning in this way

The pump may pulse once in a while if you have the water heater on, and either used no hot water or just a small amount, and the turned the heater off. as it cools the wtyet will contract reducing the pressure, so the pump may just pulse to rebuild the pressure
