Onboard Water Tank/Fresh Water Container

Hi, we're new caravanners and I was going to buy a 30 litre water porter to supplement our 23litre on board tank. However, as we are planning on using the shower and mainly going on CLs, I'm now thinking the bigger the better and planning on purchasing a 50 litre Water Hog instead. The Water Hog seems much the same as the Aqua Roll (only slightly bigger and less expensive), is there any thing to recommend the Aqua Roll over the Water Hog ?

Afternoon Liz,

We have an on board water tank and i have never used it, i think it is too much hassle for what it is worth.

I have 2 50 litre Water Hogs, i purchased them for their extra 10 litre capacity, with 4 of us showering in the van it made sense.

Liz: good question. we are in the same situation as you. What are the benefits of an on-board tank? I presume from this post you still need to carry the water to the van.

Also (a "how long is piece of string" question) how much water do people use in the shower?

Hi - I think it all depens on the system fitted to the van - our Lunar has an onboard tank and pump - water is pumped only from the onboard tank to the taps and shower, so you have to fill the tank, this is done from an aquaroll and an external pump.

In effect you can have 40ltrs in the auqaroll & about another 40ltrs in the onboard tank and water heater.

I don't know but maybe other vans have a different system that allow you to bypass the onboard tank?

As for the Water Hog v Aquaroll debate - I can't comment as to which is best, the only thing I would say is if I could pull someting that contained 100ltrs it would save me going to the tap so often!

It seems that people are either for or against onboard tanks

I have been fitting my own onboards for 20 years and wouldn't like to be without one

I always travel with a gallon or 2 in the tank so on arrival its not a got to be done straight away rain or shine job and there is water on tap on long journeys etc

I have a low level warning light and pump in from the aquaroll when needed---usually when we shower one after the other

I only need to carry the smaller aquaroll as when the low level light comes on an aquaroll full just fills the tank

I also have a pump saver timer fitted that is set to cut off just before the aquaroll empties

Its also invaluable in frosty weather

There have been several topics this year covering onboard tanks and having water in both onboard and external containers for longer showers. Please could somebody tell me if the waste tanks are doubled up to receive all the extra grey waste?

Motor homes tend to have grey water tanks but caravans don't

I use the aquaroll to top up the onboard tank and then take it and the waste water to the service point

I use an old aquaroll for waste and wheel it to the emptying point while carrying the fresh water one

As the grey is drained the fresh is filled and handle swapped over to wheel it back to the van while the empty grey is carried
