Once a caravanner, always a caravanner?

HaVe to agree with the conclusions and I would also say the problems of parking off sitd and leaving my valuables in public car parks also put me off. I accept they work for others but we are stuck in our ways.

I'm with my near namesake. not for me. but 50 years of prejudice built in plus having had my awning hit and damaged by motorvans twice in the last two weeks with never a word of apology regret etc by their drivers.
i really cannot see how anything larger than say a VW conversion can be uesd as a second let alone a first every day vehicle when not on holiday or touring, or finding a space at the surgery, supermarket, library etc. i simply cpould not afford to have this amount of money doing nothing much of the time.
'oh i can't tow' i hear, speaker ignoring his smart car on a frame.
but each to his own so long as they don't pitch up next to me ans shade out all the sun.

As Ray says, For the folk who say, we cant tow a caravan, but then go to a Motor home and tow a Small car behind , wether on a trailer or an A frame. How then will they be able to reverse such an outfit in a problem..

Having pitched up next to a few motorhome owners now and then it's often occurred to me when we've socialised with them that the male partner likes the motorhome with it's swiveling captains chair and flight deck like instrument panel, but the female partner usually envies the amount of space that we have available in the caravan, and could be persuaded to try caravanning, especially when they want a lift to the supermarket or pub. :)

Parksey, maybe thats just the way you talk to the lasses, you silvered haired old fox. :)
Looked at Motor homes and would have to keep my over 8.5 tonnne licence, to keep Elaine happy.
5 years to that though.

45 years old, 45 years caravanning. I would take an awful lot of convincing especially with the public transport issues I would be likely to encounter. Like Hutch says it would be very large and heavy to keep either of us happy. I'm already weight restricted on my licence so we'll be sticking to the caravan until I drop.

NR Nimrod trailer tent 1976-78 then caravans ever since. BUT did hire a motorhome once for a Scottish trip. So restrictive on the roads we wanted to explore. Caravan every time.
Last year's hol was a classic example of where the Mhome fails. We were all parked up on the shore line at Achiltibuie by The Summer Isles. We toured the area extensively and visited places only a car could reach. Why
on earth would I want to keep unhooking the EHU and other items eg sat dish etc . No porch awning and imo cramped. A no brainer . Caravan every time :cheer:

Each to their own, and horses for courses

As ever its about looking at what you want, and the seeing whats available and making choice which minimises the compromises that inevitably arise.

For space, go for a camping trailer, but the compromise is warmth, and security, and the luxuries. but its great for kids, and dogs, Easy and light to tow, and you can usually see over the trailer! Cars available for days out.

Caravans are a bit more cramped than a camping trailer, but their warmer, and more luxurious, Heavier to tow and often you cant see through them, but the car is available for days out

Motorhomes, Unless you go for super size, their generally more cramped than a caravan, often easier to drive than a car and caravan, especially for reversing, but not so good for larger families, and there no immediate transport for days out.

So the caravan sits nicely between camping with tents or tent trailers, and motorhomes, I have friend who mad about equestrian events, dog shows and music festivals, and virtually every weekend their away, Sometimes taking a couple of weeks for some of the larger events. For them the motorhome is the perfect answer.

A good summary of the main points Prof. We have a neighbour who attends equestrian events and uses a motor home in the same way and would not consider a caravan.

On site SE Spain 15th year same site. 15 years ago ratio was about 5:! caravans to MVs. Now it is about 9:1 the other way. Pitches are the same size so vertually none of the MVs keep within the limit lines. My awning was at least 25cm. within the lines and still got hit and there have been two near misses since. Now you can't blame the vehicle for the behaviour of the driver but you will get the point.
