One for the ladies perhaps!

Can anyone please offer any advice, including any downside or dangers to using a 'slow cooker'in a caravan.

Is this a practical step to consider for coming back to a hot meal or are there dangers and pitfalls to avoid and it is better to carry on over the hot stove?

My dear lady has asked me to raise the question on her behalf.

Many thanks for any comments on this subject.

Hello Bernard

I have used a slow cooker for many years in the caravans we have owned. We have experienced no problems with them at all. However, I would suggest you try to obtain a slow cooker as opposed to a crock pot (both electric) as the crock pot tends to cook the food quicker for some reason and the contents dry out. You need to keep an eye of the fluid and add more as necessary.

I personally would not use one in a caravan. But that's my personal choose. I use a pressure cooker, I prepare all the veg. and meat in pressure cooker, put it on when we return, perhaps you might have one already. Liz

Have never used one in the caravan as it's just more clutter to carry but they are very good. But you need to seer the outside of meat in a pan to seal and brown it off before you put it in the slow cooker for well a well cooked meal. And any waters added should be hot to start with.

The low slow heat will not brown meat and will take and age to warm cool liquids before it cooks even if being left all day.

Hello Chris

If you follow the instructions which come with slow cookers and crock pots you will have no problems at all. Yes, there is a little preparation prior to throwing everything in together, but the end result (at the end of the day) is wonderful. Well worth the bit of 'extra clutter' in my book.

Slow cookers can be a bit heavy or bulky.

We use one we got from the 'Lakeland' shop.

Small enough for just 2 people.

I have used one for years in the Van, we have a small one, enough for 2, and I leave mine on the table in the awning, we do have a socket outside, but you could always run a plug through the window, it is great to get back to a meal all ready, and waiting.

I,ve had my slow cooker since I got married in 1974. We use it all the time and think its great. Not yet used it in the caravan but I must say its a good idea. Will take it with us at easter I think. Not bad for over 30yrs old is it.
