We'd like to go up to the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) in May. We'd like to stay on Harris and North Uist but there don't seem to be any sites for touring caravans.

Any advice, suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Roger, can,t help with the 2 you mention but have been to Barra a few times without the van(15 seater De Haverlin lands on the beach) and have seen vans camped on the beach 'free camping'.

The western Isles are fantastic and the silence is deafening !

I have photos taken without a flash at 2 am on the beach as its so light. When we were there the local policeman set a trap to catch drink drivers . All the locals did was drive home the other way round the island.

One word of warning in the summer midges are a real problem.

Thanks, both

Brian - I've heard conflicting reports about midges in the Western Isles - I've seen other references to midges on Barra but I've seen comments that these islands are generally too windy for midges.

Steve - I've also found those two sites but Lewis is the least appealing area for us.

Hello Brian, Your story reminds me of the first time that I went to the North West of Scotland with a mate of mine. Arriving at a pub about 10.45 we thought time would be 11.00. We promptly knocked back 3 pints, at which point the Landlord came over and said "there's nae need to rush lads, I'll still be here to serve ye the next one.." We asked what time was last orders. He just raised his eyebrows and said "when the last person leaves." All I remember was that when we staggered out at a quarter past two, the locals were still going strong. Best Wishes, George T.
