We are going on our first continental caravan extravaganza in July. Travelling down to Portsmouth on 4th July for the overnight crossing and back on the daytime crossing on 21st July. We are staying at Pyranees Natura, 20k south of Lourds for most of our holiday but have booked sites near Royan for overnights in boh directions. We have allowed for an overnight on 20th July near St Malo and had hoped to use a municipal site. We emailed listing preferences but have had no reply. As we prefer to prebook rather than turn up on spec, has anyone got any suggestions on where we might try. We don't want to be oo far from the port as our ferry is at 10.45am.

Try Camping de la Hallerais at Taden, 2 miles from Dinan and 20 miles from St Malo or Le P'tit Bois at St Jouan-des Guerets which is 7 miles from St Malo. I think Le P'tit Bois is rather expensive particularly as we have always found the 'hot' water tepid. We first stayed there about 20 years ago and latterly 3 years ago and there had been no improvement. We normally stay at La Hallerais because you can walk from the campsite along the River Rance into Dinan which is well worth a visit.

Good ideas Dusty but these sites are either full for the date required or not accepting one night bookings mid July. Thanks anyway. Has anyone else got any ideas?

Denise, here are some more sites around St Malo but we have never stayed on any of them so cannot comment on them.

1. Camp Municipal Les Nielles, 47 Ave John F Kennedy, 35400 St Malo. Tel 02 99 40 26 35 or 02 99 40 71 11. The comments are that it is possibly crowded and some road noise. It is open from June to September.

2. Camp Municipal Cite d'Alet, Rue Gaston Buy, 35400 St Malo. Tel 02 99 81 60 91 or 02 99 40 71 11. Some of the comments are staff helpful, good views, noise from the harbour especially when foggy, good for short stays. It is open from April to September.

3. Camp Municipal du Nicet, Ave de la Varde, 35400 St Malo. Tel 02 99 40 26 32. Some comments are clean well run site on cliff top, can be exposed if pitched near the edge with sea view, some pitches small, very good for long stay. It is open from late June to September.

4. Camping des Chevrets, Plage de Chevrets, La Guimorais, 35350 St Coulomb. Tel 02 99 89 01 90. www.campingdeschevrets.com.

Other sites that we have been to in the area are:

1. Domaine du Logis near Combourg which is 26 miles from St Malo. When we first visited this site it was rather run down but since then considerable work has been done upgrading it. www.domainedulogis.com

2. La Vieux Chene at Dol de Bretagne which is 19 miles from St Malo. We have found this a very pleasant and friendly site. www.camping-vieuxchene.fr.

3. Chateau des Ormes near Dol de Bretagne which is 24 miles from St Malo. We have found this site very busy and sometimes noisy. www.lesormes.com.

There are also a couple of municipal sites in the Dol area.

You may not have had any replies yet because the sites may still be closed.

Thanks again Dusty

I've just used a web seach to look these sites up and have found an email address for the Municipal Cite d'Alet site. It looks fine for a one night stay near to the port so I've sent them an email to try to book. Please keep your fingers crossed for me that they are not also fully booked.

Fingers crossed, but I doubt that they will be fully booked.

Hi again Dusty.

We have now booked a pitch at Cite d'Alet by a bit of a round about route. I spoke to a gentleman by the name of Christopher at the 'something? Tower' which I think may be the town hall, and then a lovely lady called Annick 'phoned me and subsequently confirmed our pitch by post. One thing that struck me was the excellent standard of English these two people spoke. Anyway we now have somewhere to stay on each night of our 19 day holiday. Thanks for your help Dusty.

Denise
