.

A few times, going or returning, we have spent a couple of nights at

CAMPING L’OLYMPIC *** DE WIMEREUX

It is a reasonable municipal site. You can walk into Wimereux which is a nice seaside town.

Please recommend a place for an overnight stay near Calais.

A site very close to Calais which I've used more than a few times is http://www.lesepinettes.fr/emplacements/http://www.lesepinettes.fr/emplacements/
It's about ten miles from the ferry port and situated down a lane in the village of Peuplingues. If the reception is closed, just drive in, find a pitch which are divided by hedges, and visit the office or the house in the morning. Two people, with electricity will cost you €20..

Why not join ACSI which offers discounted sites all across Europe including the UK? You can see on a map the location of all the sites. Our satnav has the POI for nearly every site in the EU and there are thousands.

I would suggest to the OP that if he is heading East he finds somewhere well inland as the coast and some short distance inland is overloaded with would-be immigrants to the UK. If he has the time to get there before dark the Gent Municipal at Blaarmeersen is worth a short stay as Gent is well worth a visit and the bus stop into town is about 100m outside the gate. The site has a take-away Bistro, Restaurant, and a drying room for texts/awnings and a small but well stocked shop.

La Bien Assise in Guines, similar standard to Gandspette. Similar facilities but ground less sloping than parts of Ganspette.
