Hello...we are new to caravaning and this forum so hopefully you can help. We are planning to travel to Spain at the end of August crossing from Poole- Cherbourg then travelling the West coast Auto route via Bordeaux/Bayonne. We have allocated 4 days to travel through France and are looking for any easy access overnight campsite stops enroute. Many thanks
Shaun

We stopped here a few years ago whilst on our 12 hour drive through France ! It's about in the middle of your drive to Bordeaux if you want to split it up .

We were put on a picture where we could get up early in the morning and go without disturbing the rest of the site . there was about 15 doing the same kind of thing . I don't even think we even un hitched. we just put the steadies down .

You don’t spell out which port you enter France at but when we go via Dunkirk/Calais stayvnear Dover and our first night we stay in Dourdan SE of Paris. We skirt Paris clockwise using the outer ring not Periphique. Will add link to Dourdan campsite idc.

Two months ago we drove up from Roses in Spain to Caen and never again. We had two over night stops. Toll charges were just under £95 plus the cost of diesel in France is now more than the UK.
We now think that the ferry to Santander or Bilbao is the cheaper option and we would not like to lose 8 days of our holiday driving through France. :)

I have been travelling to Spain and Portugal for many years using Western channel ports and I have described the routes and night halts we use here

Actually unless you have plans for the French part of the trip 4 days is quite generous we have been doing it in 2 without a huge effort..

Crossing from Poole to Cherbourg arrives around 14.00 from memory.
If you want an immediate stop to get over the trip there is a site at Valonge just south of Cherbourg.
For a longer first leg, Pontorson has a good site - it's immediately south of Mont St Michel
Further on is Heric to the west of the N137 between Rennes and Nantes - a bit basic but fine for overnight.

From Nantes it depends whether you want to follow N137 and onto the autoroute towards Niort in which case there are several in the Fontenay le Conte area e.g Chantonnay. If you want to cut off the corner, then go viaa La Rochelle and then to Saintes. Midway there is a site at Fouras just north of Rochfort.

From Saintes south on the N137 not the autoroute there is the Moulin de lavergne site a couple of miles north of Pons, which you can reach without going into Pons.

From Pons get back on the autoroute and go south round Bourdeaux.
You can easily make La Rouletta at St Jean de Luz close to the Spanish border from Pons.

Sites I would not recommend for your purposes are the big sites in the centres of Rennes and Nantes and the 'Village' site just off the ring road of Bordeaux.
Suggest you check the intended sites as some change hands quite often and also opening dates and hours and the guidebooks can be seriously out of date.

Google camping Fontenay for example and you should get the site or the municipality website and find the details.
