PAINTING INTERIOR WALLS &CEILING

Hi, I have just purchased a swift caravan from the 1980'S.

Nice van, but it is very dull, I want to paint the ceiling white and walls cream. Is it OK to do this? Is there a special paint or just emulsion? It has a textured brown paper type covering at the moment. It was cheep as chips so painting it wont loose me any money, just need to be sure that I will not do it any harm. Thank you

Laurie

Hi Laurie,

Painting the inside of a caravan won't do it any harm, but you may want to take care about paint choice and surface preparation.

Probably a good de-grease and clean with a solution of "Sugar Soap" from a home DIY shop.

Check that you aren't painting slippery surfaces like plastic or Formica - which will need a separate specialist undercoat.

Rather than emulsion - which isn't terribly stable in damp environments - I'd use a harder wearing water based "gloss" paint with a matt or silk finish - and use paint pads not brushes - so you end up with a slightly "dimpled" textured surface.

Hello Laurie,

Rob has given you some good advice. Do not use emulsion for the internal surfaces. I would go for an eggshell either oil based or to avoid the unpleasnt smell a water based eggshell which will give a durable surface in a confined space subject to condensation. As normal with any painting job, surface preparation is the important part of the job, get that right and the rest is easy. Make sure you have no grease or other contamination on the surface before painting and have plenty of ventilation to ensure correct curing.
