PAYG Dongle use in France

I am told my Vodafone PAYG Dongle will not operate in France as I am NOT on a Contract.Has anybody experience of buying and using a French Dongle (say SFR)please.

I do not want to be tied to using a Site just because it has an Internet Connections and do not like the Cyber Cafes very much.Will be in France for 12 weeks.
