Peak District Congestion Charge

The National papers last week reported that the Peak District may soon face a London-style congestion charge. It may not be imminent, but it is certainly being considered.

What do Practical Caravan readers think about this proposal?

I will not visit there from now on, motorists get to little for waht we pay into the ecnomy.

I suggest a total boycot ofthe whole area by caravanners and holiday makers etc.

Lets see how they cope financially with no motorists coming there way.

If you were thinking of booking a Peak district site, phone and cancel or phone and say you were going to book but have heard about local congestion charge plans.

What about the case for the defence !

The income from tourism in all it's forms is the main source of income for businesses in a National Park. The proposed congestion charge will simply alienate many visitors who will go somewhere else.

The idea of a congestion charge is to "protect" the properties of those wealthy enough to own property, often a second property, in the National Park. The congestion charge will do nothing to help working people who live in the park as it'll drive away many of their customers.

I've already crossed London off my list of places to visit. If further congestion charges are introduced, I'll also cross the Peak District, Birmingham etc off my list.

Dont worry it will never happen . the clowns who run the local autorities up here are not capable of running a traffic management scheme of such magnitude .The local turist industry who pay the business rates will not alow them to ruin their trade

So dont be put off this may be a rumour started by The Dales or Lake District Coljac

If it will reduce the number of ramblers who erode the national path network then I am afraid that I am for it.

However what will happen is that these "people" will park just outside the boundry and walk straight across farmers fields etc to get to where they want while the likes of caravan owners will foot the bill.

Another victory for the bobble hat brigade!

I suggest our feelings should be given to the local Chamber of Commerce - after all it is their members who will suffer if visitor numbers fall.

I can not believe that these elected officials who thought up the idea believe that the local tourist industry would support the concept.

Seems just another silly attack on the car by the loonies.

Still - We have loads of space, and good car parking in the New Forest. So perhaps we will get more visitors.

So every cloud has a silver lining!

Having paid what I rate as VERY HIGH prices for UK camp sites compared to top rated sites in Europe with classy facilities and top class swimming pools that better some UK local authority leisure pools. I had it explained to me how much rates and water rates were leveled on campsites by a guy in France who had owned a campsite in the UK prior to his French site. Paying for probably the most expensive fuel in Europe and VAT and Duty on some of the most expensive cars + service costs with VAT. If the peak distict wants tourists and to charge for road use they are having a laugh.

The best thing is to make the areas business's suffer now and stop this madness. I no longer spend money in London, no more theatre or restaurant trips and no shopping there. If everyone avoided the place Livingstone would soon crumble.
