Just got new caravan, supurb.

Anyone suggest how I can illuminate the grab handles with the car disconnected. I see the new ones on some forcourts have taken direct supplies from the battery to the side lights. Would like to swith by a separate switch. Can anyone suggest where to take a feed from etc. The purpose of this is to provide illumination at night to open lockers etc.

Many thanks.

I would say very easy to do,you need to trace the + cable from the light and cut the wire, inbetween the cut place a 3 way rocker switch so common to the led light is in the middle and the exsisting wire to one side, add a new perminant 12v + feed to the other side of the switch.

I hope this makes sense,so what will happen is rocker switch switched one way lights on the other way on via your car as per normal layout.Could do both lights through 1 double pole switch,,if you feel like it you could extend cables so switch is in a more accessable place

Mikey's suggestion sounds like a good one, but can I just add that if you do this, make sure you take the 12v feed from a low rated fused supply. Or if you go direct from the battery, use a cheap in line fuse like those fitted to car radios.

It is highly unlikely that the feed wires or the LEDs in the grab handles would short out, but if they did, a fuse could prevent a fire and a difficult discussion with the insurer :)

Hi Brian,

Coming at it from another angle, I have found that using a headband mounted torch (LED style) is a very effective way of assisting in setting up after nightfall, including accessing lockers.

Cheers
