Hi everyone. Just got back off our holidays. We went down to western super mare this year. I have just got our 406 and never towed anywhere with it till this holiday. As you can imagine I was a bit nervous at first. Although it is a 2ltr deisel it is 10 years old. The caravan is a Lunar sunbeam from 1986. I think the weight is about 1250kgs.
Anyway I filled it up and away we went. I am getting round 45 mpg on its own so expected around 30 with the van on. At the end of the holiday it has worked out at 38mpg. This was 600 miles with the van on and 500 without it on. So I am pleased with that.
The car itself behaved very nice. Kept its speed on uphills and had enough left over to pull away to pass wagons at 56 mph. Most of our journey was on motorway so the 60 mph was more or less my speed all the way down there. The only problem I found and was not happy about was when I was going down steep hills, though there was only a couple, the caravan seemed to push me a bit but I just let the car go on the over run and slow its self down and it as fine then. I was worried about the suspension, I thought it might be a bit soft but when the caravan was hooked up all was level.
All in all I would not hesitate to replace it with another 406 as the comfort level is quite good and the drive position is excellent (for me anyway). The only thing wrong in the car is that the aircon condensor had a hole and that never worked so I had to use the secondary air con...the windows.
Overall a nice car to tow with and good on the fuel.
