Hi everyone. Just got back off our holidays. We went down to western super mare this year. I have just got our 406 and never towed anywhere with it till this holiday. As you can imagine I was a bit nervous at first. Although it is a 2ltr deisel it is 10 years old. The caravan is a Lunar sunbeam from 1986. I think the weight is about 1250kgs.

Anyway I filled it up and away we went. I am getting round 45 mpg on its own so expected around 30 with the van on. At the end of the holiday it has worked out at 38mpg. This was 600 miles with the van on and 500 without it on. So I am pleased with that.

The car itself behaved very nice. Kept its speed on uphills and had enough left over to pull away to pass wagons at 56 mph. Most of our journey was on motorway so the 60 mph was more or less my speed all the way down there. The only problem I found and was not happy about was when I was going down steep hills, though there was only a couple, the caravan seemed to push me a bit but I just let the car go on the over run and slow its self down and it as fine then. I was worried about the suspension, I thought it might be a bit soft but when the caravan was hooked up all was level.

All in all I would not hesitate to replace it with another 406 as the comfort level is quite good and the drive position is excellent (for me anyway). The only thing wrong in the car is that the aircon condensor had a hole and that never worked so I had to use the secondary air con...the windows.

Overall a nice car to tow with and good on the fuel.

What I forgot to say is that the engine had been changed to an engine from a citreon picasso 52 model a month before we bought it. It had only done 40,000 miles so this is where the efficiency comes from I think.

Hi Raccoon

I also have a 406 but mine is the 2.2ltr. It was my company car and I have had it from new but when I retired I bought it from the company because it had been such a good, reliable car and an excellent tow vehicle. All round it is probably the best that I have ever had in 25 years caravanning, including Volvos and Discoveries. It is now 8 years old and still going strong.

Like you I get excellent MPG. I regularly do a fairly straight run of about 44 miles each week and get about 55 mpg but have had up to 60. (Admittedly driving at only 55mph just to see what I could coax out of her). The average urvban cycle is 45. Towing about 1250kg I get an average of about 30mpg but have had as much as 33 on a 200 mile M5 run but as low as 27 driving into a very strong head wind for several hours.

The only major problem that I have had was the emmissions particulate sensor in the exhaust system failed on our way to the south of France but even so we managed to get to our destination in the 'limp home mode' before we got it sorted out. Not a lot of fun towing a caravan in the Pyrenese when the engine won't go above 2000 revs !

Because of its age we have now bought a Nissan X-Trail, mainly for towing but I and my better half love the Pug so much we won't part with her and she is our vehicle of choice when we go out solo.

Regards

Hi there

I also have a 406 2.0 diesel and tow a van of 1400kgs I have just towed my caravan to Devon which for me is a round trip of 1000miles I have to agree with everything that has been said this makes a wonderful towcar. My caravan is a fairly large at 20ft and a heavy van but the 406 never struggles even up steep inclines I can still hold a reasonable speed. On the motorway I am rarely out of 5th gear even on inclibnes and there never seems to be a lack of power also as has been said the fuel economy with the van on is very good. I would also not hesitate to buy anotherr one and hope to have many more years happy towing with my trusty 406. Glad to see other people are also having good experiences with them as they really do make great towcars.

Regards!
