Sorry if this has been posted before but I thought it's worth mentioning.

Unwitting motorists face £1,000 fines as thousands of photo card driving licences expire.

Thousands of motorists are at risk of being fined up to £1000 because they are unwittingly driving without a valid licence.

They risk prosecution after failing to spot the extremely small print on their photo card licence which says it automatically expires after 10 years and has to be renewed - even though drivers are licensed to drive until the age of 70.

The fiasco has come to light a decade after the first batch of photo licences was issued in July 1998, just as the they start to expire.

Motoring organisations blamed the Government for the fiasco and said 'most' drivers believed their licences were for life.

I told my daughter about this and she checked her licence and discovered that it expires in March. She looked on the DVLA website and it said that she will get a renewal reminder 2 months beforehand. Guess what ? She hasn't received a reminder!!

Be Warned!!

Years and years ago I remember buying a driving licence for life instead of the little red folder thingy that had to be renewed every three years or so. I will be 70 next year and have heard that I must have a photo licence. Will this be free, does anyone know?

You have to pay for your photo licence, once you reach 70 the licence has to be renewd every 3 years .

Just received my new Photocard Licence this morning. I sent it off last week even though it didn't expire until the middle of Feb. (Well, the law does say it has to be renewed BEFORE it expires)

I see I now have a new expiry date of 17th Jan! Huh! So they have set it for 10 years from the date they received it, not adding 10 years from the date of original expiry! How bad is that? I've lost a whole month! (Equates to fourteen and a half pence!!) LOL

So it's not a good idea to send it in too soon. Might as well get your moneys worth since it's

hi lisa

you licence is still valid you only need to renew the photo type licence because i presume that since the 10yrs since they have been issued you might have changed appereance....i know that if you change your address there is or was no charge for a photo licence

well i should be ok with my photo licence because as i hold a hgv (c+e) and im over the age of 45.....every 5 yrs i have to take a medical to keep my licence which is a sore point to hgv drivers...not with taking the medical most drivers have no problem with that, its the cost of the medical.....anything up
