I have just bought a 2nd hand picasso 2.0hdi and am at a loss regarding its towing limits, the handbook says 1850kg weight, but what would be a safe towing limit for the car,and does anyone know how it handles while towing?I am looking to buy a 2 berth Lunar,Avondale or Swift, not decided on the model yet but would any of the models in those makers ranges be suitable for the car?

Thanks..Mark

Hi Mark

Your looking at 1300kg kerbweight

John
thanks john....so if the unladen weight of the caravan was say around 900kg ( which i think one of the swifts i was looking at was )then would that mean i have about 300kg to load the caravan? i say 300 to ensure its not the total weight the picasso can manage...its really confusing for us beginners!!!

Mark , assuming you understand the 85% rule (not law )the van you buy will give its total weight on a plate somewhere use this and the 1300 kg and bobs your uncle!

Hi Mark,

Firstly..Congratulations on the purchase of your Picasso!a damn fine car in my opinion.

I too have a 2.0 hdi and it tows my Bailey Ranger 470/4 (mtplm 1172kg) very respectively.

John is correct in saying that the kerb weight of your picasso is 1300 kg (with driver and a full tank of juice).

in spite of The Picasso only having a 90 bhp unit it does produce a fair bit of torque which is needed for towing. Also, it has a very short rear overhang which again helps with stability.

The picasso feels very well behaved whilst towing our Bailey and is a very stable outfit. I do need to use the box a little on a motorway incline for example like most cars of this weight and power.

My advice is to go for a caravan with a mtplm of around 1200kg and provided you load the car/caravan correctly you should have no problems whatsoever.

Good Luck!

Andrew

My data tells me that the maximum permissible towload of the Picasso 2.0HDI is 1500kg.

thanks andrew for the advice, and the comments about the torque and stability...will take on board what you said about the weight issue also. Most caravans have the unladen weight in the advert, well the site i use anyway, and most of the ones i like are around 800 to 900 unladen, would these be too heavy or not? sorry to be "thick" but i am a raw beginner!!!

Perhaps you are looking at the C4 Picasso?

The Xsara Picasso has a kerb weight of 1300KG

Yes, Andrew, the 1500kg towload limit applies to the C4 Picasso 2.0HDI. The Xsara Picasso 2.0HDI towload is rated at 1300kg max. As Mark made no mention of the Xsara, I presumed he meant the C4.

I have a 2002 Citroen Picasso 2.0 HDI & tow an Adria 5 Berth Caravan (approx 1200kg with luggage). I have recently had the ECU re-mapped by Shires Performance tuning & it has changed the car, approx 15% more power & torque & better fuel economy. Solo motorway 50 - 60 mpg (70 to 80 mph), towing 35 mpg (60 mpg)some 5 mpg better that before. I will now be treating it to fully synthetic engine & gearbox oil oil at service time just to be on the safe side.I have been warned that the Picasso cluthes as standard can be a bit "soft" so I always pull off with min revs, no problem as the Picasso will run clutch out in first gear at 7 mph. Stability with Al-ko hitch lock not an issue, towing mirrors not yet found a set worth buying, any suggestions most welcome

Hi Mark,

We to have a Pic',and like Rafe we had ours remapped by Jamie at SP Tuning.

This was over three years ago and the car has been superb since. It returns avg 55mpg on a run and 30-33 mpg towing.

We towed a 05 Vendee loaded to 1300kg and it never faultered.

We still have it but have just aquiered a Mondeo tdci 130 estate, not cause the Pic is bad just the Mondeo is heavier and the Vendee'mtplm is 1398kg.

Oh another thing,My wife won't let me sell it either as she 'Loves her little car' Lol!!!

Pete.

Hi Mark

Picasso unladen wieghts are as follows:-

1.6 petrol = 1240kg. 2.0 Petrol = 1326kg. 1.6 92hp = 1300kg. 1.6 10hp = 1313kg. So take 1184kg mtplm of a caravan div by unladen wieght of car 1240kg x 100 = 95% MATCH.

I hope this helps Steve.
