We are contemplating north west France next year with other family caravan owners. We have different size and age vans. Are their any restrictions in general on pitch sizes/awning/annex use that any one knows about. Also my sister has a vety old small van -well maintaned but with glass windows. Is this likely to be a problem? Comments welcome.

The best way to assess pitch sizes is to look at the site's website. Generally, the greater the number of stars the bigger the pitches. We used to have a big trailer tent about 7m x 4

Hi Karen, We normally reckon that we can get our large twin axle, full awning and annex, car etc onto a pitch of 100 square metre, providing it is roughly rectangular. Once you have booked your pitch we have never had any problems as to what we put on it.

As Mike says your sisters van will not be problem.

However i would suggest that you book quite early (assuming you are going during school holidays) if you want to get all your vans parked on pitches next to each other or in a block.

Having children we have often booked through Eurocamp and found them to be extremely helpful.

Enjoy.

In many years of going to France I have never had a problem with pitch size, in fact they are usually much larger than their UK counterparts.

It is true to say,I don't know ehat others think, getting onto some can be a problem often because of trees that often are actually on the pitch which to the French is not a problem because they usually have smaller vans but more importantly their door is on the otherside.

We went to one site near paris where the only way onto the pitch was uncouple and push, and thats from someone who can reverse a van onto a sixpence(showing age),Select Sites have removed the site.

Just a point about your sister's old van - you'll find MOST french vans are much older than ours, and much smaller - usually still the square boxy glass-window type. She won't look out of place at all, in fact should fit in rather better than anyone with a posh twin-axle, end bathroom job! Pitch sizes, generally, are bigger than in England - and some are just enormous. The price you pay for a pitch includes the whole pitch, and you can put whatever you want on it, usually. We've had caravan, awning, car, and two pup tents on pitches before today. You shouldn't have a problem - but if you have a twin-axle then let the site know - some sites have 'no twin axles' policies but can make exceptions when they know you are a genuine 'caravanner' and not a 'traveller or itinerant'.
