Places to visit near Folkestone/Daleacreas CC site

Hi

We are going to a Caravan Club site near Folkestone in August (called Daleacres). We have planned a daytrip through the Chunnel but less sure where to go that might give us cheap, family-friendly days out in the local area. We are members of the National Trust, would be grateful if any other members could recommend places to visit? We have two boys aged 7 and 4.

Hi,

A big must and one that the boys will love is the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. It is a minature gauge steam line and runs for quite a few miles across Romney Marsh. There is also a full size steam railway at Tenterden,this line runs down to Bodiam in Sussex where you can get off the train and go to Bodiam Castle, which is National Trust. Also take a drive up to Dover Castle. As well as the historic keep, there are the Wartime tunnels that were used by the military, and at one time by Winston Churchill himself. There are a few National trust sites in Kent, Sissinghurst Castle has wonderful gardens, as does Scotney Castle, and Ightham Mote up in West kent is well worht a visit as well.If you were to be lucky with the weather, then the beaches at Dymchurch (not far from you) are ok, but Camber Sands about 10 miles or so from you are great- but watch the tide, or if you want to run up to North Kent the beaches at Broadstairs and Ramsgate are very good as well.

Agree with John. Dover Castle and the "secrte tunnels" are a must and if your'e up to an hour or so drive along the coast (west) to Hastings and then inland to Battle you can visit the venue of the 1066 England V France conquest. We found it well worth a visit. Both are run by English Heritage so a membership at either venue will cover the other.

PS Delacres is a great site also. Best and safest route to the site is to leave the coast road A258 at The Prince of Wales pub and follow the road to the site, it IS narrow in places but not as bad as other roads leading to it.

Visit Rye. It is a lovely little town and is on the way to Hastings if you were going to go that way.
