plastic window parting company

Having read elsewhere in this forum, I feel I must add some weight to the problem with Polyplastic window delamination. Recently I took my caravan to a well known dealer in Somerset to have the recommended repair.

Apparently, according to their mechanic, they have had many window repairs to carry out, some successful and some not. He stated that if the window had fully delaminated the only real answer was to purchase a new window.

Burstner do not guarantee that water will not enter the window after the repair and he had stated that this had been a real problem.

He suggested replacement as the only sure safe route.

I requested a quote and was told that the total cost for replacement would be approx £1500, even with the 60% discount offered by Polyplastic.

As I could not afford this I went ahead with the repair.

I now have a caravan with built in fish tanks and have been offered £3000 less than the book price if I want to sell.

One of the chaps has commented in a previous forum that Polyplastic is only the name of the material from which the windows are made, so who is Polyplastic NL and who is manufacturing all these defective windows.

I have written to Burstner and Polyplastic, but up to now they will only repair the windows, which in my case is a total waste of time.

Incidentally I have a friend with a Dethlef motorhome with the same fault and they have replaced his windows free of charge

George,

No one really knows how bad the problem is. 'Andrew' another contributor to this Forum has a lot of information but even he states he has 600+ enquiries to date. Comparing that to the total production of caravans and motorhomes in Europe which is far far greater, does not explain everything. Dealers will commentthat theyhave had many window problems, but they may not all fall into this category. Crazing of panels, panes touching each other, black mould and even just fading, have all been mentioned as 'window problems'.

Polyplastic Nl is the main supplier of windows to the leisure industry in Europe, and that includes virtually every manufacturer, not just Burstner. They have also been doing so for well over 10 years, but this is the first issue of this type to surface. However, polyplastic itself is a trade name for a resin material like acrylic, which is used to make the actual window panes, not the bonding materials that hold the panes together. I am sure your actual window has not failed, but the joining together of the panels. Items made from polyplastic material are sold in many countries of the world by different organisations. The UK leisure industry gets many of its windows through a UK based Company also making windows from polyplastic, not part of Polyplastic NL.

The price you received for a window does seem excessively high and a cost of between 20% and 40% of your quote seems more likely. As Val has mentioned have a look at some of the Companies advertising replacement windows, and see what they will offer.

George,

A couple of possibly dumb questions entered my brain after making my Post.
