Play in coupling head

I have a 2004 model Compass with BPW chassis and coupling, I have noticed what I think is excessive play in the coupling head. With the 'van uncoupled I can lift the coupling about 3mm. This gives off a loud clonking noise in some circunstances (when travelling very slowly over traffic calming raised surfaces). Do you think this movement is normal or do I have a problem.

PS greasing the coupling takes away the play until the next time the van is towed.

Alan, can you confirm the movement is in the shaft itself and not the tow hitch. Do you have a Winterhoff stabaliser hitch fitted?

2004 and grease.

I take it that you don't have the Winterhoff friction stabiliser!!

I would contact the dealer for a warranty claim

It has a Winterhoff Friction stabiliser, the grease is pumped into the nipples and not on to the stabilser

Until some grease is pumped into the 2 grease nipples on the hitch tubes nylon bearings, there is indeed a fair bit of movement, in a new caravans tube.

But once 10 to 15 pumps of grease are added to each nipple the free play goes away, i dont know whether there should be as much as 3 mm & i cant say ive ever heard any noise come off one.

If in doubt get it checked out.
