Please Help

Can someone please help me work this out as I want to be legal when towing my caravan. I don't understand all these different weights. My car's KW is 2140, 85% weight kg 1819, MTW 3360 My caravan is unladen 1636 Laden 1900. How much am I left with for loading? Thank you, your help will be very much appreciated. Niki

This will equate to around an 89% match which, althouh over the recommended 85%, isn't too far over and is well within the limits of your towcar.

Hi again, have I worked this out correctly. Can I only add 183kg to my caravan with the weights I gave in my last posting? I have taken 85% away from my KW which leaves 1819, then taken my unladen caravan weight 1636 and taken them away from each other which leaves me 183kg to load up with, is this corect? If my car can tow 3360 MTW does this mean I can add the heavier things like awning, bbq etc into the car boot to keep the weight done in the caravan? Thanks again Niki

You don't say what the maximum permissible towload for the car is or its GVW. That will determine what payload you can put into the caravan or what has to go into the car.

You have also not mentioned what type of driving licence you hold. Your gross train wieght is in excess of 3500 kg and you need to ensure you are legally allowed to drive such a weight.

I may be guessing wrongly but your Posts suggest you may have a new licence.

She says the MTW (presumably the maximum train weight) is 3360kg, so that would fall within the 3500kg category B licence limit. However, if the car's kerbweight is 2140kg and the caravan weighs 1636kg unladen, then the gross train weight would already be over 3700kg even before anything is put on board either the car or caravan.

Somehow, however, I suspect that either the kerbweight or the gross train weight figures is wrong. I would expect the difference between kerbweight and gross train weight to be greater.

Both the cuddles.abelgratis.net and the whattowcar sites need to be taken with a pinch of salt and can, at best, only be used as a rough guideline. According to my data, the Cherokee 2.8 CRD has a max. GVW of 2520kg and a max. permissible towload of 2800kg, so the figures need to be checked. If mine are correct, then the caravan can be loaded right up to its MTPLM and still be legal.
