Anybody else read the article today re that fact that just five companies in the UK produce more CO2 than all us car drivers in the UK put together.

Yes! just the top five companies! - Probably best not to think about the thousands of other companies that polute.

Still by increasing the Car Tax on those nasty 4x4's - Phoney Care has got some of the "green vote
 
What about the growth in cut price flights, your average plane pumps out a significant amount of ozone hole making gunk.

I suppose the saving factor is while the flights are cheap it controls the amount of new vanners hitting the road.

The caravan club had 56,000 new members last year, at that rate we will run out of pitches very soon!

Back to your original point CliveV, these big companies will probably have many directors on their boards, who are well in

with goverment types, who will turn a blind eye for a loan or brown envelope, or what about that nice holiday on a cheap flight somewhere nice.......makes you wonder?
 
I am always a little sceptical about newspaper reports, but to see in black and white that one of our UK industrial giants alone produces more CO2 than some Countries was startling to say the least.

Still for us 4x4 drivers it does put the sillyness of the "anti" into perspective in that they clearly are now seen to be silly in targetting the 4x4, whose emmissions are no better or worse than some saloon cars as seen by the list of vehicles that will now have to pay the extra Car Tax. Many new 4x4's do not even make it into the new high tax band for vehicle that emit the most CO2, whereas some very familiar "family cars" do!

This coupled with the fact that the most popular 4x4's are shorter than these same "family cars" rather pulls the rug from under the anti's.

Don't you just love it when the truth is there for all to see.

The data in the guardian was from government data not in the public domain, but obtained by the Guadian under the Freedom of Information Act.

Of course they do - the top 5 companies were either electricity generators - like EON, NPower, Drax and EDF - or steel manufacturers - Corus.

If all of us (home and industrial) were more careful with our electricity use, we could see some significant reductions in CO2 emissions. But no, I guess people prefer to leave their video recoder on standby all the time...

Many years ago Port Talbot, in south Wales, was declared a smokeless zone town. The borough council tried to enforce this on to what was then the Steel Company of Wales/British Steel and were told that should they enforce the act they would close Port Talbot works and keep Ravenscraig in Scotland open. The council had to back down because of the number of unemployed which this would have created. Company power over the law of the land.

Agreed - admittedly it was a few years ago but not that long ago that the Junior School where my wife worked was advised by a Hampshire County Council official to turn on all the heating to get their consumption up so that a threshold level could be met so that ALL the units of energy used went onto a lower tariff!

I know things are better now, but I do get p*ssed that the motorist gets taxed left right and centre as well as blamed by the "anti's" when in fact - even if we all stopped using our vehicles today and towed our caravans with our push bikes, the pollution would NOT stop, because we are not the greatest polluter.

Agreed - big business seems to be able to dictate the rules. Phoney Care and his cronies just seem to want to play at dealing with the problem by pandering to those with more opinion than knowledge.

The reason? - well big business CEO's can lend the politicians a few quid (!) in return for a Knighthood, and the politicians can bribe the "anti this that or whatever" with silly legislation in return for votes in the key constituencies that tip the balance.

I think LB, a week or so ago, was quoting that this Government has its huge majority on the back of only about 35% of the possible voting public actually bothering to vote.

All power should be generated by Nuclear, then we can save the Environment, save fossil fuels for our cars (that is until we have electric cars with batteries charged from nuclear generation ) The green brigade can shout all they want it's going to happen. I know two wrongs don't make a right But if a French station goes up, I think the fall out would be on both sides of the Channel.

Caravan Manufactuers should be looking to fit Wind Turbines to the front of all vans and then when we are going down the motorway we can generate power for our cars batteries, which in turn could power the cars motor. -)
 
It is one thing to post our views on here but that achieves very little, email your MP and other political parties with your views, eventualy they will have to listen, remember an email costs nothing, but a vote can cost an MP their seat.

The so called ecologists objected some time ago regarding the construction of a barrage across the River Severn with turbines built in to generate electricity using the tide. The objections included the wild life at Slimbridge would be lost - fair enough certain species might disappear but other forms of wild life would replace it - nature will correct itself. They also objected to the loss of the spring and autumn tidal wave as it is supposed to be the second highest tidal wave in Europe - so b****y what. The electricity generated would have been sufficient to close both Aberthaw Power Station which is coal fired and also Hinkly Point which is neuclear fired and is identical to Chernobel, but better maintained.

The Welsh Assembly has now again suggested the construction of the barrage as a means of energy and declared Wales to become eventually neuclear free. What has happened now is that these idiots have once again objected to the barrage. What the hell do they want? They are against neuclear energy, fossil fuel energy and now tidal energy. Why don't they just disappear down a tree trunk or get back to their caves and leave the real world to thrive and continue to prosper.
 
My MP is more interested in preserving the MOTH. She has presented a petition to Parliament asking that the moth be listed as an endangered species and it will be illegal to kill a moth. What chance do the electorate of Bridgend have with an MP like this?

To be fair I do think we should preserve the environment. My beef is that some numpties want the world to believe that the car is the fount of all evil - but in reality we motorists are a very small contributor and modern technology is reducing this pollution ever more. If your MP is concentrating on a personal vendetta rather than doing what she was elected to do then the only thing to do is vote her out.

I agree with VVV - venting feelings on here is OK, but not going to achieve much in itself. But an email to the MP saying you will not vote for her can and does make them sit up and take notice.

Meanwhile the large industrial polluters just seem to carry on regardless - swapping "Pollution Permits" issued by government as tho' the issue was a game of cards.

These Pollution Permits cost money! - and of course the money is raised by charging us more.

But of course I am an environmental terrorist (I have been called that on this Forum) because I drive a 4x4 to tow my caravan and other trailers.

You are forgiven Clive V ( I dont drive a VW) no matter what MP's feel personally they are voted in to represent us mere mortals, so let them know if they are failing in their njobs. To often we here of MP's persuing personal matters, which were never on their manifestos, so use your PC and remind them why they are in Westminster. The fear of unemployment can have some wonderful results.
 
A few years ago when the buzzword was ozone layer and both global warming and carbon trading had yet to be invented, I remember reading an amusing snippet from a debate on the subject(ozone layer hole)in the US Senate.

One Senator was concerned about the "emissions" from the vast herds of cattle in the US with the consequent danger to the ozone layer and was calling for an urgent solution - a certain Senators contribution was a bag that could be strapped to the beasts rear so than the offending methane could be collected. He was politley corrected by another Senator who told him that the evidence was that it was belching that produced most methane and so his "bag" would probably suffocate 95% of the cattle.

Taking this a step further, has science explored the possibility that it is the explosive increase in world population and the parallel increase in belching not to speak of other human gaseous emissions that we should be worrying about?

It's not an attractive political platform I'll grant you but the media might run it up the flag pole on a slack news day - it would definately get 4x4's off the hook.

I can see the headlines in the Sun now - SCIENTISTS NOW SAY DROUGHT CAUSED BY F-----G MP's call for public enquiry into polution caused by too many people.

Well it's no dafter than most of the hysteria we have to put up with!
 
I was given to understand that the hot air the MPs emit was from their rediculous speaking whilst in the House of Commons. I have now been corrected that the hot air they emit is from f*****g and belching. If only the Dail Mail could get hold of this scoop it would be front page news.

On a serious note - one other theory that gets ignored by the anti's is that if you read what some astronomers say regarding the radiation from the sun - they seem to be saying that the sun has increased its output steadily over the past few hundreds of years and this has the effect of heating up the earth.

But hey - far easier to pick on a vehicle type if you are sad enough to feel intimidated by an object.

These are the same politicians who objected to the Cardiff Bay Barrage which has now become a regeneration success. And I don't see much change to the areas bird life.
