I have now had the old gas fied machine sorted but I am constantly having "pop ups" coming on the screen at most inappropriate times whether I am on the net or simply having a game of cards. How do I stop them for good as they are getting on my nerves and I will only end up putting my foot through the screen LOL.

depending on your browser you should be able to block pop up windows. Go in to tools and options .

Or download a copy of mozilla firefox and use that as your browser ( its better than IE).

This blocks pop ups as a standard feature although it will ask if you want to allow the pop up as some websites use the pop up feature.

Also see if you can download a copy of Spybot, and Zone Alarm as you may have some malicious spyware that as you connect to the net, contacts a host company that then sends you lots of pop ups.

A similar problem - a week or so ago my anti-virus software quarantined a 'Trojan' (can't remember what it was named) - and I followed the procedures it suggested. Since then every time I open up the computer I get a pop-up 'Error message' which says 'Couldn't open the file WINDOWS/Ubamaxagwoy.DLL, module not found'. I can close the box each time with the top right hand corner cross, but nothing happens if I click the 'OK' button, or another large red 'button' on the message. I suspect that this is something to do with the 'quarantined' trojan. I've run Spybot and it still doesn't stop the message appearing. I've also cleared any obscure files from my Windows folder. Should I be worried, and how can I stop this message appearing each time? Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks Sproket, We don't routinely back up files - I know we should!!! So there's nothing to restore (unless I'm barking up the wrong tree and you mean something else). The pop up message is still there tonight, and I think it may also be affecting the anti-virus software which normally updates itself automatically, but all day today has reported problems in updating.

I'm going to call in my son's friend - who works in computing and loves 'messing around in hard drives'........... and I'll let you know.

receiving commercial pop ups when you are not on line can only mean your computer has been attacked. You need to do a full system scan with a good antivirus programme. and possibly more to rid yourself. Some viruses can be stored in the restore files so if you restore t an earlier version you can reinstall the virus
