Pots and pans when towing

Each time we pitch up and leave a site we find ourselves loading large zip-up bags with pots, pans, the steamer, kettle, frying pan etc etc and loading from / to the car. The reason is that, left in the cupboards, they would doubtless rattle around when towing and would likely get damaged.

As we were getting ready to leave the site in Dorset yesterday, my wife asked if everyone has to do this, or was there a simple collapsible holder which could be used to secure these items whilst towing?

I said I'd ask the forum !

In our van we have locker at floor level underneath the oven. All the pots and pans and kettle go in here. They don't seem to rattle around at all and with them being low down in the van, it's an ideal place to store them.

Sorry I can't help with the transporting from car to van.

Graeme.

We use those collapsible plastic storage boxs between the front seats on a non slip mat (bathroom mat is good) and put a pole through the bed locker doors to stop the boxes moving around too much.

We always used non slip mats in the cupboards and if any thing was at risk a variety of things such as Cartons, Drying cloths etc just get placed between items. And all our cupboards get secured with velcro so we never arrive to the pots and pans misile scenario. Some of our caravan staff is has been in use for over twenty years and will be used when we get the next van.

Sorry John, but I bet its entertaining to see you arrive and leave site ;-)

I've never done this, and never had any problems - and bear in mind that I use crockery plates and mugs.

To reduce the risk, you can get sections of clip-together plastic mats, with posts which clip in to divide the area up so that luggage doesn't slide about. I believe they are intended for car boots, but I would imagine they could be quite effective in a cupboard.

Similar to others pots and pans go in cupboard under cooker, done this in every van we have had without problem. Anything else in that sort of line goes in bottom drawer under wardrobe along with a couple of drying clothes to prevent them rattling about too much.

Cris, velcro on cupboards - I never thought of that. I assume you mean the sticky back stuff. Does the thickness of the material allow the doors to close fully?

My post related to storing anything safely on the floor.

I admit we store most of the kit you descibe as others have either in the low level cupboards or under the seats.

Your original post gives the impression you have not actually tried this but it does work - unless you are doing a Jeremy Clarkson style of towing.

I normally store awning, aquarolls etc as I described not pots and pans.

We use strips of velcro and wrap around handles to secure doors and all sorts in caravans.

Nothing to untie and does no damage to the fittings. Have used adhesive velco at odd times but the glue is useless when it gets warm!

If you double back soft loop velcro on itself and sew the edges down and the fold the hook velcro so it sticks to both sides of the loop tab it will hold a lot of weight and not peel apart.

Basic "velcro sandwich" ! A two inch wide velcro strap of this type will hold my weight. No knots and just pulls apart when you want.

Cris,

Thanks for the idea.

Who uses all those pots and pans?? Ah! those with the 4 burner cookers. Knew there was a reason the manufacturers introduced them!!!! Cunning plan.

My van has no oven so the space is used for a very large drawer cupboard with a wire basket frame just like the ones in your kitchen at home. Ergo, no problem.

If I want roast chicken then a rotisserie from the local supermarket does just fine.

Who does the washing up I wonder?

Scotch Lad.

Our caravan kitchens have always been my domain and I do most of the washing up to. One Wok and a small collection of stuff that is multi purpose and light weight.

Its always just been a great time to be away from work and enjoy cooking with time to relax and try out local fresh foods and experiment.

Ah, you must be more technical than I. I am only allowed?? to handle the drying cloth, partly because I have trouble getting the Marigolds on my hands, also I am sure, because SWMBO prefers it that way. Who am I to argue?
