Powering a laptop

Any tecchies out there?
I have been told I can power a laptop in my truck using a male to male cable to a USb socket ,is this so?
I have a USb port on an additional 3 way cigarette lighter I use.
Want to keep the grandson occupied on long journeys, if the above is not possible will have to fork out for in car DVD player

A normal USB will not supply enough power to run / charge your laptop but......

On my aldi 3 way lighter and USB it is only 500ma and as Sproket said wont be enough power Ive got a 12volt USB point that goes in a 12 volt lighter point that gives 1500ma and that seems to charge Ipad fine got mine off the bay for about £5 iirc.
