Would welcome some feedback on how people have 'lived' with these since they came out a couple of seasons ago - have they been welcomed, too dark, would prefer original style?

Regards

Deb

IMO, dark windows are symtomatic of the times in which we live, the isolation syndrome.I find it quite depressing to walk round caravan sites anytime after about eight pm, as most of the curtains a drawn, cutting the occupants off from the rest of the world. Lots of modern housing estates are similar, with high hedges around the houses. I'm glad I live in a village which doesn't close down after dark!. I find it very sad.

Years ago, caravans looked cosy at night because people only had curtains to draw and not blinds. It is blinds which cut out all the light. If you only draw the curtains, light still glows through but you have privacy and sites don't look so spooky as when people pull the blinds down. We only use our blinds (if at all) once we settle down for the night, but previous to this, our van looks cosy and warm when viewed from the outside even though the curtains may be closed.

No, I don't peer into people's houses any more than I peer into peoples caravans.. The whole site just looks more friendly with curtains open. You don't close them during the day, do you? I accept that they need to be closed when privacy is desired, like when you're in bed, but what goes on in the evenings that you need to be shut away for? It's approaching 8.30pm, quite dark, but my curtains, and the neighbours that I can see are open, but I'm not peering into their house. I'm just getting on with my own life, but open curtains make the house(or caravan)look much more friendly and approachable. For the same reason, we always have an outside light on after dark.

We started caravanning when our kids were very young. When they reached teenagehood brought friends, boyfriends etc we packed up caravanning for about 4 years. On our 25th wedding anniversary I asked my wife what she wanted to do.Fly to Paris for a romantic weekend maybe.Go out for a meal maybe.Guess what she chose?????

The answer has something to do with this thread.

We like our privacy in the evenings and do not like people trying to see what we have got and what they have not got. Exception is Xmas when we decorate the awning for every ones enjoyment, even the kids. Luckily in the middle of winter not many of them dashing around.

I want to go camping in Cornwall says the wife.So I went out and bought a tent and various bits of equipment.

So off we went to Loo.It rained every night but glorious sunshine in the daytime. We fell back into our old caravan habit of walking around the site generally being nosey and guess what.

Before the end of the week I said to my wife'Let's get another caravan'.

THANKS TO ALL THOSE CARAVANNERS WITH THEIR CURTAINS OPENED,SIPPING WINE,WATCHING TELLY, ETC

Thanks to you we are again enjoying the best hobby ever!!!!

We have darkened windows. I am surprised by the comments made about walking around the site at night time as these widows become see through when there is more light in the caravan than out side. I must admit that I to like to see lights on in vans at night time, not because I am nosy because it looks friendly and welcoming, I also like to see what other units are around and the differences there are.

If you want privacy then shut your curtains/blinds, if not give a wave this is meant to be a friendly hobby. When we brought the van with the dark windows I said I was not keen on them, but they are meant to help stop your upholstery fading. How accurate that is I am not sure. But I do think it helps to keep the van cooler in the summer. It is nice to lie in bed with the blinds down knowing you can see our but others can not see in and watch the world go by first thing with a cup of tea. So over all I can take them or leave them if you have them they are nice if not well you are not missing much.

Hey we love our dark windows, and no it's not dark inside. For those "non dark window" members who don't like them should try before critisising them. Yes they do make a caravan look "a little more classy", in my view, but they also have a useful side.

32years ago my and I started caravanning and in those days when you went on to a site people would come and give you a hand setting up and give the wife and children a drink and a biscuit.

Do you ever see that these days? the answer is NO and with people talking about nosey gits and peeping in caravans it just shows that whole attitude on caravan parks and people staying on site has changed, not for goodI am very sorry to say.Jim

I must admit I am curious as to the effect on the inside of vans of darkened windows.I suppose the best way to find out would be to have 2 vans side by side ,one with ordinary windows and one with darkened, because I'm sure that whichever windows you have ,you get used to the interior look.

In my previous comments I referred to nosing into other people's vans perhaps I should have said I like looking at other people's vans and seeing them enjoying themselves.I also find it inspiring .As I've said it got me back into caravanning.
