problem with 12volt lights

Can anyone help with this one please?

When i turned on the 12 volt lights in my caravan on, nothing happened so i presumed that the leisure batterie had gone flat,i got the mains lead out and connected to mains.

Straight away lights came on and charger light iluminated,I removed batterie from unit and tested voltage 12.5 volt reading my unit is a lunar chateau 400. mark
 
I have a Cristall van which is also made by Chateau. The 12 volt lights above the kitchen are actually wired to the 240 volt system through a transformer and so do not work when the mains is not connected. I also 'discovered' this and had replaced the bulbs before the 'light dawned'.
