Pup tents on UK pitches?

Hi,

What's the general consensus on pup tents in UK. Just been to France and every family had at least one small tent to house the kids leaving the van free for mum & dad. This is not a common sight on the Scottish sites I have visited and wondered if this was down to site rules or some other caravan etiquette.

Thanks

Hi james,

Last year we spent 2 weeks at CC Hillhead, Devon and my eldest son came to visit for a couple of nights.

We paid the extra fee and were intending him sleeping in the awning, however as he was touring and had his 2 man tent with him, the wardens allowed him to use it for "sleeping only", so long as it remained within the confines of our pitch.

For many years we used a lovely, family friendly private site just outside of Newquay and last year was the first time we changed, due to overcrowding and the influx of workers using the site as a base the previous year.

One caravan a few pitches away from ours had the usual awning attached and 5 tents along the other side of it, some of which were pitched right alongside the neighbouring caravan.

I didn't find that use of a pitch acceptable and although I was not directly affected on that occasion, I will not be going back to the site for fear of being that neighbour at some point.

If used sensibly, a pup tent is no different to a sleeping annexe in an awning and can afford a bit more independence to maturing children, however if you ask me whether or not I would be happy to see every pitch sprouting them and my answer would probably be no.

Ken.

When the kids were younger one of them wanted to be independant so I gave her a pup tent which was always erected next to the van surrounded by windbreaks and all on our pitch.I thought that having the windbreaks would make it less intrusive.

I would imagine that one of the main reason for the lack of pup tents in Scotland was the weather ;)

On a more serious note, France has not yet descended as fully into the sewer as the UK - and it's safer to leave children out in their own tent without the fear of perverts, abductors and people who are just plain crazy and would set the tent on fire!

It's wonderful living in a land awash with diversity and multi-cultural enrichment - but there are *some* downsides to this Government organised Eden.....
