Hi

If you would like to sign a petition to try and stop puppy farming, please copy and paste the link:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/banpuppyfarms/
For info: Vast numbers of puppies are produced in conditions akin to battery farming. They are crammed into small cages and crates, often in buildings without adequate light or ventilation. The bitches are bred from on every season from a very early age and do not have the relevant health tests carried out for their particular breed. They are not provided with adequate food, water, exercise, grooming and medical attention such as preventative worming and flea treatments. The puppies are then removed from their mother, usually before they are properly weaned, and transported at a very young age in cramped conditions to be sold on in puppy outlets or pet shops. This appalling start in life results in an unhealthy and poorly socialised puppy which really does not make for a happy and healthy family pet.

Don't you find it sad that in 2007 Britain we have to sign petitions to stop this barbaric practice carrying on?

What I can't understand is what is the attraction of west Wales, where most of this puppy farming goes on.

Thanks for signing the petition folks.

It is despicable that these farms still exisit.

I've seen an ad for one 'breeding establishment' - although its not a 'farm'. They have numerous breeds of pups for sale, numerous breeds of cats for sale, male cats and dogs 'available' for stud. A couple of badly put together stallions available for stud. Even various breeds of birds available too.

These people have no morals, no compassion. It's all about money, money. These animals never see the light of day, the parents arn't health tested, I would imagine they are full of worms and parasites.

It's disgusting.

Thanks again,

Lisa

I've often thought that LB. Possibly location (barns, buildings off the beaten track?) What do you think?

I will sign this petition but i'm afraid little will be done as most petitions just end up in the bin. Unfortunately it is not illegal to breed dogs in this manner.

I'm not deliberately being negative because I do feel strongly about animal welfare but if the general public demanded the puppies only come from "home" breeding the demand would dry up from the puppy farm sources.

The Kennel Club are not seen as being a responsible organisation in this area because they clearly benefit from the pedigree registration fees that they gladly take from any quarter.

However, it is well documented and recommended by the RSPCA that all puppies should be seen with their mother, ideally in a home envirionment, before agreeing to buy the puppy. Unfortunately, most buyers only see the cute puppy and they don't question the conditions in which it was bred.

So, it is in the hands of the prospective buyer to reject any puppy that does not conform to the RSPCA guidelines. If this happened the puppy farms would go out of business.

I kinda agree with Beemermal. These places are there to satisfy a demand, remove the demand and the supply dries up.

Unfortunately there are people in this world who only care about themselves and who will buy, steal and extort to get what they want.

Some years ago we were after another Miniature Schnauzer and saw a litter advertised in for sale in South Wales in our local paper. We mentioned this to the lady who clipped our dogs because she also bred Schnauzers. She asked if she could come with us, which we agreed to, so off we went to Bridgend.

We arrived at the house and was told to take a seat. This was a joke because every seat was taken with clothes etc.

The lady then went out the back and brought in 6 puppies. They were soaking wet and shivering and despite this their little tails were wagging. Our friend then asked if we could see the mother and after a lot of stalling the owner went out to fetch her. While she was out Pat ran her fingers against the hair of one of the pups and even from where I was I could see they were riddled with lice, I'd never seen so many. Pat also whispered to me to look at their stomachs. They were distended so also were alive with worms.

Eventually the owner brought the mother in and it is hard to put into words what she looked like. Again, this one was soaking wet but her fur was all knotted, thats what she had left. She was half bald. Pat had a go at the owner and pointed out they needed worming and also the lice on their bodies, we then declined to purchase one and left. They wanted

Hi

2 years ago I contacted a Cocker Spaniel breeder with regard to buying a puppy to keep our border collie company, she only had 1 left but, in her words, "was too ill to rehome being the runt of the litter - she did however say, again in her words, "that she had done breeding with the mother and she was for sale, if not she was going to have her destroyed".

So, consequently, we travelled miles to rescue the mother, who, at just 2 when we got her, had already had 5 litters of puppies.

I was amazed when we arrived at the breeders, it was, in my opinion, more of a puppy farm. She had over 20 Cocker Spaniels who she bred from, shut up in small pens.

So, I have also signed the petition, we wouldn't be without our Cocker Spaniel - there was no way she was going to be destroyed, and although a little clingy, noisy, scatty and a thief at times, we love her to bits.

These people have to be stopped from doing this, now.

Lolly x

Just slightly off topic, how do people feel about show people who breed numerous litters? One person (who I don't know personally) bred 135 pups over four years (although I don't know how many bitches he had to produce that amount). These were SBT's. That must have netted him approx

His lordship made a valiant attempt to name and shame this puppy dealer....Unfortunately the RSPCA only follow through on the most serious cases.

Most of the time the RSPCA just chip away at it because they don't have either the teeth, the funding or the resources to follow every reported case through with follow up visits and the puppy farms know this only too well.

Lisa, you are reflecting the views of small scale breeder /exhibitor who loves dogs. You do however, make sweeping generalisations and judgements.

Define a puppy farmer for me.

I think you refer to animals that are bred in diabolical surrounds and without due care for their welfare. I think any animal loving person would support you there.

You do however, refer to someone who has bred 135 puppies and possible sold them for
