Hi Geoff,
I took my van into our local dealers yesterday morning.
I showed the fitter how I connect the Gas bottle, (as over the phone he indicated that perhaps I was not Fitting the connection properly)Told him that if he placed his head inside the locker he would smell gas, at first he tried to pull the connector of the bottle but soon jumped back as the smell and a loud hiss was coming from the conection area.
He was convinced it was the connector, he unsrewed the connector of the gas pipe , and lifted the gas bottle from the locker, looking into the neck of the gas bottle the seal looked a bit worn, brought another new bottle the seal inside the neck of this bottle was more visable, you could see about 1 mm of the seal protruding within the metal neck, where as the old bottle
the seal appeared to be tapered flush with the internal diameter of the bottle.
He fitted the old connector to the new bottle but the gas was still escaping, through the area where the control lever is ( ie the one you move from horizontal to vertical to connect the gas)
So he fitted a brand new replacement connector to the gas pipe tested it against the new bottle, and everthing passed A1.
We bought this brand new van last July complete with a full Gas bottle unconnected, when I tried to connect up I could not get the connection to fit , so I took the bottle back and had it replaced with the bottle which also proved to be faulty.
I now know what to look for when exchanging Gas bottles with regards to the seals.
I have in the past read with interest the problems some people have with getting no gas through the connection to the cooker, but never read about my experience where the gas was escaping
from the connector.
Trust this has been of help.
