My hubby has just said if we go through Belgium and Germany, for Germany we can only do 50 mph on the motorways unless we have an MOT done on the caravan then we can go faster.

Which is???

Belgium has a speed limit of 120km/h, regardless of whether you are towing or not. Germany, like most other Continental countries, has a general 80km/h speed limit. However, if your outfit meets the following conditions, you may tow at 100km/h:

1. The towing vehicle must have ABS brakes

2. The tyre equipment on the caravan must be appropriate for the load and speed and must be no more than 6 years old

3. The caravan must be fitted with hydraulic shock absorbers

4. The weight ratio must not exceed 80% if the caravan doesn't have a stabiliser OR 100% if one is fitted that meets the requirements of ISO11555-1 (the AlKo and Winterhoffs stabilisers do) OR if the car has ESP stability control designed for use with trailers.

If the above conditions are fulfilled, you can go to any German MOT and get the necessary official 100km/h sticker with the necessary stamp of approval to display on the back of the caravan. Some time ago, someone in this forum said there was a way of getting the sticker already in the UK (like coach operators do) but I cannot remember how or what you have to do in that case.
