are they a good idea for a normal site, would you like to park next to one, does the price out weigh on site electric, any other comments as we are thinking of getting one

I think you'll find a site with electrics includes the electrics in the price (in this country) so using a generator on that type of site would be pointless. You then have to decide how many times you will go on a site without electrics, and for how long, to decide if it's worth buying, and carting around, a generator.
I suppose they are allright if camping on a greenfield site. But I prefer to us solar energy to re charge the battery, much greener, Bazz.
If you used a generator on a site with hookups and neighbours nearby you would very quickly become unpopular. The steady throbbing noise of a generator is quite annoying. Someone has posted elsewhere that they are very inefficient, and create noise and smells too.

Depends what you mean by a normal site, but taking it to be one with electric hook up, then a generator is a waste of money and a very expensive one at that.

Sometimes there is no alternative but to use a generator, but even the super silent ones do produce some noise, and they are very inefficient at producing the power you need. (Typically only 6 to 8% fuel to useable electricity) Also petrol is rather expensive.
For water heating, the fridge and space heating, using the gas system is much more efficient, and of course noise is not a problem. (Efficiency is minimum of 70%)
A well-charged battery should last you the weekend for lights hot air fans and water pumps.
