Has anyone fitted rear view cameras to their caravan?

It seems to be a good idea for reversing, and rear view when travelling. (I haven't yet found none vibrating mirrors!)

My van is an eight metre with blank end wall - so no through vision.

As you can get wireless cameras it seems to be a good option. Am I missing something obvious?

Have a look on ebay at the above

I have had rear view cameras for the last 5 years as like you the vans have had a blank wall

Its a great for overtaking, maoevering and pulling in and if you are travelling with another outfit much easier to see if they are with you!

I have always gone for wired rather than wireless as I have met people with interference problems on wireless such as picking themselves up on the CCTV etc

Its legal if you use it as a rear view and don't use the monitor to watch the TV en route!!

JohnG,

What size of monitor do you use and do you have it as a permanent fitting your car? or where do you position it?

Hi Rob I have a 7 in colour monitor that fits into the glove box in front of the steering wheel in the X trail and stays there permanently

My friend has a Mondeo and uses a similar size screen but has to mount it on a bracket in ntha centre of the dashboard prior to each trip.He use the cigar sockey for 12V power

You can get a replacement rear view mirror with built in screen

My first try with a rear view was with a CCTV camera pointing out of the van rear window and a 10in colour TV on the back seat that was viewed through the rear view mirror but 7in TVs are quite cheap now

Hope that helps

JohnG,

Thanks for the info, its not something I'm considering at the moment but due to change the van in the Spring so might think about it then.

If you are the same JohnG as posts on caravanning4u site I've also posted a query for you there re "jacks".

Just a word of warning:

Although the law does not object to using CCTV as an additional means of seeing what's behind you, it does not allow such a system to replace outside rear view mirrors. You must still have an adequate field of view through the mirrors, so you cannot do without mirror extensions just because you have CCTV.

Thanks JohnG. Is there an easy way to enlarge the photograph from my end, I did copy and paste it to a word document, then click and drag but the clarity went a bit. (or maybe the varifocals are needing renewed!) Where abouts on the chassis frame do you locate the jack?

My apologies to John, the original poster for taking this off topic.

My apologies too

Can't get photobucket to upload so the pic of the bits is in the camera/file still

It locates in the existing Alko brackets and under the chassis rail as fitted by Bailey

Hi Nick I have had a couple of bullet type cameras

One was Ok until I pulled a wire off

The second is still OK but was replaced by the rectangular type with LEDs for night vision

That somehow got cracked and let moisture in so I now have a similar one that is water proof so far

There are 2 main systems CCD and CMOS

CCD is supposed to be better or so those who sell it say.

The 1st 3 were CCD and performed well but the latest is CMOS and at

Another couple of questions JohnG,if you don't mind. You say you prefer the wired version compared to wireless. Do you have your camera permanently wired to the caravan 12v system? I then assume you must have a fairly long length of connection cable leading from the camera to the monitor in your car. Did you route it externally under the van and how did you bridge the gap from van to car.

Thanks for all your help

Hi Rob

The camera 12V comes from the van electrics and as the habitation relay switches everything but the fridge off I used the fridge feed on the red wire from the 12S plug at the fridge end where there is a convenient terminal block

The wire from the camera runs from the rear of the van through the roof lockers to the front, down through trunking to the floor and then trough a hole in to the front locker.

Its a phono cable with a plug on the end and enough slack to reach the car where it plugs in to the phono lead that goes from the back of the car to the monitor.

So when you hook up there is only one phono connection extra to do

I have my join externally inside some caravan black waste water pipe but my friend takes his in to the boot to join up

The wires going through the roof locker pass the Tv point so I have a join in the phono cable that enables it to be plugged in to the TV.I also am able to swap the camera 12V from fridge circuit to van circuit on site and then I can see what is going on outside if needs be!

Hope that helps

The very nice man in Hong Kong, has sent the kit and it arrived this morning! Not bad for an order placed on Sunday!

I got it from a company called Orbis. The type I've bought is wireless with a 7" monitor. The camera is CCD with ifra red leds for night vision. I'll let you know how well it works when I've fitted it!

My only concern is getting the supply from the camera to the frige. It may be a bit of hassle getting the cable down the inside of the caravan back panel.

Anyone know how to do that on a Bessacarr 645?

John

I would run the cables inside the roof lockers until you are level with the curtains and stick a length of self adhesive mini trunking vertically behind the curtains from the locker to the under bed space.

You could then either go along inside the van or under the floor via a vent or drilled hole

hope that helps

Camera fitted (broke out in abit of a sweat drilling holes in my caravan!) Put loads of mastic in!

Monitor fitted into the car in arctic conditions! But it seems to work ok.

Only got to get the van together with the car this weekend and see if it all works!

We're going to the Glastonbury carnival this weekend - no not as an exhibit!

We'll be staying on a brilliant site near Langport called Bowdens Crest - highly recommended.

Watch this space......
