Thought there would be more comments regarding the check on the motorway . It was reported 46 caravanners were checked and 16 were unsafe. Wonder whether anyone using Forum was one of the 16.

I wish the police were as keen on stopping the gangs of kids roaming the streets and causing mayhem, stabbing people and damaging peoples property as they were on harassing motorists.

Its a shame my boos won't let me do everything the easy way...

Yes i agree that safety is inportant, but on motorways i often see signs saying tiredness kills ,take a break. We have often pulled into motorway service stations and are unable to park often due to cars parked in the caravan section. Is it not the service station staff or the police job to shift these people that cannot and give them a fine .Think on fellow caravanners this no room to park problem must have happened to you.It is about time theses Donkeys were sorted.

They're too busy waiting for people to go 5mph over the sped limit or checking for people using red diesel to bother moving people parked in the wrong place!

...or the people who attacked my pregnant sister.

I'm with you on that one Paul.

I was subjected to a head on hit and run accident 3 weeks ago and what have the police done, sod all.

Because I was too busy trying to save my own life to get the registration number of the car, they couldn't be bothered to spend half an hour a morning at the sceen spot checking a blue peugeot 206 with a loud exhaust to see if it's right hand drivers door mirror was broken or a new one fitted but panel damage was there.

It doesn't take sherlock holmes to do that bit of leg work does it!!

They can spot a bald tyre though at 500 yards at midnight though. The easy nick of one bit of paper.

16 out of 46 is just under a third, mmmmmm Says a lot about our fellow caravanners that 1 in 3 are prepared to drive an unsafe combination.

These are potential killers on the Motorway. Also I do hope the Police can spot a Bald Tyre at any distance.

Policing of the streets to prevent crime is a different matter to preventing death by dangerous Cars Lorries Caravans etc.

Like most city centre's, Hull's can be spolied on a night time by idiots who cannot handle the amount of alcohol they have consumed and therefore like to punch / kick / bite / stab random people who are just out for a good time.

Whenever there is trouble, there are never any police around to help.

A year ago we could not settle my daughter back to sleep after waking at 12am one saturday night. After a couple of hours we gave up and put her in the car and took her for a little drive (never fails!). When driving down the (very empty) main road near us, there were two police officers with a speed gun, checking that I was not exceeding the 40mph speed limit , which I was not. In the remaining fifteen minutes of the journey I did not see another vehicle.

These officers could have been in the city centre preventing trouble and locking up offenders, but it's much easier and just as 'point worthy' to maybe stop five people for doing 45mph in a 40 than it is to break up 5 fights and maybe top someone from being seriously hurt.

I agree that bad driving and excessive speed can hurt people but as long as the police farce are allowed to waste their time loitering around in layby's then this country will continue to develop more and more 'no-go' areas including most city centres.

Hi Gumbo, you seem at present to be the only one to comment about the original thread as to nearlt a third had unsafe outfits. i cannot remember word for word now but it seemed that over weight, bald tyres, luggage rack held on with bungee straps etc.

The 1 in 3 figure for vans with faults does not mean that 1 in 3 vans on the road are illegal in some way. The Police are selective in who they pull in and know the likely offenders. They give out similar figures for overloaded / defective HGV's in my area. They have spotters a mile or so before the check which give advance warning of likely offenders.

It's funny how they never check the vans belonging to travellers when on their annual invasion of Bournemouth.

I personally wish that the police would target the caravanners and those with trailers who blatantly exceed the speed limit on motorways, and even, in some cases, use the outside lane of the motorway.

They KNOW exactly what the regulations are, but they are too arrogant to comply. My main reason for detesting them is because when, inevitably, they demolish their pride and joy all over the motorway, it's those of us who ARE driving carefully who have to sit for hours whilst the police cart away the debris, and re-open the road.

As my Advanced driving Instructor told me many years ago........Any fool can press an accelerator down......but only a fool does it and feels safe at the same time.

Not down here my friend. They have regular checks on them in Devon and Cornwall, and more often than not, turn them round and send them packing.

if its anything like round here lots of it and loads on your council bill to pay for it.Ironic that 'they who pay nothing' never get a fine but drop something yourself and get 'fixed penalty'.

Robert back to topic it seems that some 4x4 drivers just do not get the thing about mirrors. I belive that even one of them was quoted as saying he did not need them.

To mu mind it is these types that need pulled in more often along with the pick up and 2.5mtr Hobby brigade. Do these people not know that this is illegal.

Do these people not know that this is illegal.

You need to be able to see down the full length of your vehicle/combination to the rear corners. I can quite comfortable do that, without fitting extension mirrors. ( even though I have them ) It never ceases to amaze me how everything is a crime, except what we motorists do when breaking the Law.

I would be in favour of Two Individual Police Divisions one for Crime and one for Motoring Crime, even to the extent of different Vehicle markings and Uniforms

Your amazed

I wonder why they fit about 6 mirrors to the avarage lorry nowadays?

Would it be to give them a better field of view or are they all pointing in the same direction and maybe the drivers just like spares.

Any UK artic driver who is any good will insist on five mirrors.

Nearside rear view

Nearside wideangle

Nearside close proximity

Offside rear view

Offside wideangle

Most are a legal requirement

Look out anyone who dares altering the settings.........

Beware foreign left hand drive vehicles they have severely restricted offside rear vision

Yes I was amazed.

You missed the point about legal and illegal.

Now you are onto a different tack with Lorries having 5 mirrors. They have to reverse into stores and tight yards that's why they need the mirrors, they are totally different to caravan combinations!!!!!!! Am I better with a rear view camera rather than extension mirrors ???. I can't clip another vehicle with a rear view camera No but I can with extension mirrors. That's why I don't like them at

A 2.5 m Hobby now here we have an anomally. I can tow this with an EU registered vehicle. If I was say German and wanted to visit the UK I could bring my combination and not fear getting into trouble with the UK police. I wonder how that fits in with your views of right and wrong ????????
