Can anyone give me info on the renault Espace 1998-2000 good or bad as a tow vehicle, and what the kerbweight etc is.
PSHello Kevin,
I tow a variety of trailers withe a W reg Grande Espace 2.2dT diesel. It is rated to tow upto 2Tonnes MPTLM. I do some times tow a twin axle trailer near to 2T, and as a tug it is very competent.Of course you know a trailer is on teh back but it still manages to keep up with the flow of most traffic.
However there is a fly in ointment in that the gross train weight is quite low so you have to trade off trailer mass with pay load in the car to keep things under the GTM.- not a problem for me and ok for most normal family caravans.
My sources suggest that all phase 3 espaces are rated to tow upto 2000Kg - however for accuracy check with the manufacture or dealer.
I understand that the 2.2DCI is an even better engine.
ps Kerbweight was about 1,750kg.I used to tow with a 2.2dCi grand Espace 2001. It went like a train, although I only got about 33mpg solo and 28mpg towing. It regularly consumed EGR valves, but they were replaced under warranty. We had other problems, but perhaps it was a Friday car.
Overall a very competent towcar, as long as you get one that's reliable.
Hello MHKevin
I ran several Espaces when I worked in fleet management and they were all good and didn't cost serious money at all. However typically a car starts to cost money after year seven on average and whilst the dti engine is fairly bomb proof some of the engine electrics aren't.
Best to use an Independent Renault specialist. Get a good one and it's a very good car full stop. Equally a lemon will cost you money seriously.
