Hello Kevin,

I tow a variety of trailers withe a W reg Grande Espace 2.2dT diesel. It is rated to tow upto 2Tonnes MPTLM. I do some times tow a twin axle trailer near to 2T, and as a tug it is very competent.Of course you know a trailer is on teh back but it still manages to keep up with the flow of most traffic.

However there is a fly in ointment in that the gross train weight is quite low so you have to trade off trailer mass with pay load in the car to keep things under the GTM.- not a problem for me and ok for most normal family caravans.

My sources suggest that all phase 3 espaces are rated to tow upto 2000Kg - however for accuracy check with the manufacture or dealer.

I understand that the 2.2DCI is an even better engine.

PS

I have discovered that the 2litre petrol versions do have a reduced towing limit - check with the manufacture regading your specific model.

I used to tow with a 2.2dCi grand Espace 2001. It went like a train, although I only got about 33mpg solo and 28mpg towing. It regularly consumed EGR valves, but they were replaced under warranty. We had other problems, but perhaps it was a Friday car.

Overall a very competent towcar, as long as you get one that's reliable.

I've had two espaces both the older Phase 2 models from late 80's early 90's both were the 2 Litre injection petrol version but nevert he less, they both pulled like trains.

One had an Ifor Williams trailer loaded with a Jag 420 behind it all the way from Glasgow to Leominster in Herefordshire. The car weighed 1900Kgs and the trailer about 500Kgs, and still it managed 50Mph without fuss.

My father had a year 2000 Grand espace 2.2Dci and that towed just as well. He got shot of his because of lousy fuel consumption at 23Mpg on diesel.

As I'm famous for my plugging of Renault, I will say that over the 23 Years and 16 cars that I've owned in the Renault range and that is from a 5 to an espace not one of them has failed to do what it said on the box. As for running cost's I've not yet spent more than

Kevin,

I previously towed with a 1.9 galaxy, but now have a 2.2DCI espace and it is brilliant, loads of space. I've had a couple of problems with it eg. new egr valve and new fuel filter. Used it to go to France this year, excellent. I guess its like everything you will get some people who love them and some people who wouldn't touch them, its personnal preference

I ran several Espaces when I worked in fleet management and they were all good and didn't cost serious money at all. However typically a car starts to cost money after year seven on average and whilst the dti engine is fairly bomb proof some of the engine electrics aren't.

Best to use an Independent Renault specialist. Get a good one and it's a very good car full stop. Equally a lemon will cost you money seriously.

Yes it a general comment but it is applicable Renaults Espaces. A tale-tale sign is the first user buy's the Car new and off loads it usually at 3 years. The second purchasers also has a similar life span but the sale of the car is often caused by an increase in maintenance cost and the thing is when vehicles are this age they are not cheaper items relatively but items with a lot of costly man-hours attached.

Monkeys Husband.
