Renault Espace's

Has any body had any experience of towing with a mark 4 2.2dci Renault Espace with the 150bhp engine and 6speed manual gearbox?

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately I have had no experience with the Espace. Although it is a very nice car, can I suggest you take a look at the review on the www.honestjohn.co.uk wesite. I admit the report may only be for a limited number of Espace's, but it may influence your future purchase. There may be others on this forum who can offer you their opinions based on ownership?

Hello Mike,

I can't comment on the Phase 4 model, but I do have a phase 3 2.2dt (not dci) Grande Espace.

If find the vehicle to be a great tow car, its feels to be in good control of the trailer. and that is both a 18ft caravan or a 2 tonne MTPLM TA trailer. The car is very comfortable and the children love it with its proper seating and high eye line, and room for people and luggage. Despite its size, it drives well, quietly and has pretty good road manners.

Sadly though, It has not been the most reliable of vehicles, and it has tended to be costly to repair as the parts seem especially expensive, and often time consuming to fit.

Recalled twice for heater matrix problems

Oil cooler radiator needed to be replaced.

Hydraulic clutch cylinder and linkage (Made of plastic!)

Gear shift linkage.

PVC cable insulation hardening in door hinges leading to broken wires and loss of central locking and electric window operation.

Crankshaft position sensor failure of original and replacement.

Despite the problems I still love the car and will probably drive it into the ground, unless some one makes me an offer I cant refuse.

- But buy another? probably not. I would look at other makes now and to match the size, I would strongly consider Kia Sedona or VW transporter
